Team Santa Barbara 2011

November 4th, 2010

We are pleased to share the news that Santa Barbara will be on the fastball map for the 2011 season. The news comes from, longtime Santa Barbara player, Phil Hiromerides. The team will play in local Santa Barbara tournaments, including, most notably, the best of the West tournament June 4-5, 2011 ( held in Santa Barbara) as well as Masters events. Lots of familiar names and faces on this group.

The 2011Team Santa Barbara roster:
(pitchers shown in bold)

Ben Limosnero
Joe Vigil
Phil Hiromerides
Mick Ventura
John Silacci
Tony Acedo
Bud Sander
Mark Bennett

Pete Favero
Steve Garcia
Steve Adams
Russ Arellanes
Clayte Robinson

Kevin Spiers
Robert Renteria
Joe Edwards
Ron Mizener

Aaron Owens (part-time)

Coach Gary May
Coach Clyde Bennett

Santa Barbara has a long history of men’s fastball in the Southern California area, including the Santa Barbara instant replay team of the early 1990s, and Santa Barbara Bucks team that followed. The Bucks represented California in a number of ISC World Tournaments. A number of the players on the 2011 Team Santa Barbara squad were members of those Bucks teams, Additionally, catchers Tony Acedo (Team Rainey), and Aaron Owens (Long Beach Painters, and as a young 18-year-old with the 1990 Vista Bombers) also bring ISC World Tournament experience to next year’s squad.

Editor’s note: I’m sure this news will bring a smile to the face of our friend Dave Blackburn, who is a longtime member of this group. We shared a quote from Dave about teammate Phil Hiromerides in a feature story about Phil some time ago, “The Greek God of Hitting“. In talking about Phil, Dave Blackburn said:

“We called him the Greek God of Taters, because he didn’t just hit the ball hard, he mashed it”.

2011 ISC World Tournament Shortened to Seven Days

November 2nd, 2010

The International Softball Congress and its 2011 host, Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau, are announcing that the 2011 ISC World Tournament will be shortened to seven days.

“The change follows the results of a survey conducted after the 2010 event in which teams overwhelmingly requested we shorten the tournament,” said ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister.

For 44 of the 48 teams, the tournament will start on Sunday August 14 and run through Saturday August 20 with all games scheduled to be played on six diamonds at the Green Valley Complex in Moline, Illinois.

Four teams will be asked to play in two evening games on Saturday August 13 with action continuing on Sunday afternoon following the Hall of Fame induction breakfast on Sunday morning.

Opening Ceremonies will be held on Sunday at 6:00 pm.

At this time, we anticipate holding two registration sessions and manager meetings, the first on Saturday afternoon for teams playing that night or prior to opening ceremonies and the second early Sunday afternoon for the remaining teams.

The tournament format will be the same as used in Midland this year; 48-teams playing in an EGC format with the first 24-teams eliminated going into a 24-team single elimination for the ISC II Championship. The ISC II portion will be played Tuesday thru Thursday.

We recently had our annual checklist meeting in Quad Cities and were very impressed with the improvements Quad Cities will be implementing to better serve teams, umpires and fans.

ISC Regional Vice Presidents have now been given their region’s berth allocations so they can begin awarding Qualifying events in their respective regions.

More specifics about the 2011 ISC World Tournament will be distributed by spring 2011.

Softball career kicks into gear with Black Sox
By SHANE HURNDELL

New Black Sox softballer Aaron Kuru pictured in his part time job as a horse trainer for John Bary of Hastings.

New Black Sox softballer Aaron Kuru pictured in his part time job as a horse trainer for John Bary of Hastings.

Aaron Kuru knows his part-time horse training job is a risky one.

A fall from a horse or kick from one has the potential to either end his hopes of playing for the Black Sox softball team or delay his debut for New Zealand’s most successful sports team on the international stage.

“I’m a little more cautious now … I know I have to look after the body,” said the Fast Pitch infielder who will join Maraenui Pumas pitcher Regan Manley as the two Hawke’s Bay players in the Black Sox side which will play a three-test series against world champions Australia across the Tasman next month.

“A few weeks after coming back from the Black Sox training camp in September I had a fall and I had to wear a neck brace for a little while,” recalled Kuru.

At the same he appreciates the horse training compliments his fitness training for softball. It wasn’t so long ago Kuru, 19, was eyeing a career as a jockey.

“Then my weight went up to the 65kg mark and I realised it wasn’t an option. To do well as a jockey you don’t really want to be too much over 52kgs,” Kuru explained.

His Black Sox selection which was announced last month suggests his softball career is on the right track.

“To be honest it was a surprise. I thought I still had a bit much to work on and I was a few years away from getting the nod,” said Kuru.

His Fast Pitch team is unbeaten after three weeks play in the Hawke’s Bay premier men’s competition and is almost as dominant as the star studded 1995-96 season Fast Pitch outfit was. Kuru pointed out the side is displaying the benefits of some “gutbusting” winter training sessions under player-coach Rayner Te Wake and Hawke’s Bay-based Black Sox pitching coach Chubb Tangaroa.

“My selection shows if you put in the hard yards you will get the results,” said Kuru, the fastest base runner in the Bay, and the second fastest in the Black Sox side.

During the Black Sox camp his best time for the run from first base to third out of six attempts with a 30s break in between was 5.39s.

That sort of pace is exactly what Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase needs as he looks to combine speed with power in his batting line-up.

Editor’s note: Unrelated directly to the above story, but if you didn’t see the feature on 60 minutes Sunday night about the racehorse, Zenyatta, it’s worth a look. She’ll be in the Breeder’s Cup this weekend.
