ISC # 6 Midland Knocks Off # 4 Chicago/NY

June 13th, 2010

Midland upset by Owen Sound, then upsets Chicago/NY

The Midland Explorers, who have beefed up their roster for a run at the ISC World Title in 2010, while hosting the ISC World Tournament, showed fastball fans that they are prepared to compete, knocking off the #4 ranked Chicago/New York team at the Boulevard Lounge tournament at Midland. The tournament will conclude tomorrow.

The game was the marquee matchup on Saturday, pitting two of the three highest ranked teams in the tournament against each other. (The NY Gremlins are ranked #3). Midland’s Mike Joseph picked up the win over Sean Whitten, on loan to Chicago/NY from last week’s Best of the West winners, the California A’s.

The game was a see-saw battle with never more than a single run plated in an inning by either team. Midland took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but Chicago/NY rallied to send the game into extra innings, on a solo home run by Chicago/NY third baseman Wilson Cabrrera.

In the international tie breaker, Midland scored one in the top of the 8th, on a Dan Loney sacrifice fly, only to have Chicago/New York answer back with one of their own on an RBI single by Steve Mullaley.

Midland notched the eventual game winner in the top of the 9th to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI single by Midland first baseman Steve Roberts. The game ended in dramatic fashion, with pinch runner Jordan Taveras thrown out at the plate trying to tag up on a fly out to left fielder Dan Skillings.

Midland was not the only upset winner of the day. They themselves fell to a lower ranked team, the Owen Sound Junior Selects, 1-0 in a late afternoon game, in another extra inning affair, with the game winning run coming home on ground out to third base hit by Owen Sound’s Jared Clancy. Owen Sound entered the tournament at the #13 ranked team in the ISC rankings released earlier this week, while Midland was # 6.

No-No by Jeremy Manley

Another Michigan team, # 24 ranked Marshal Lightning, also delivered an upset, knocking off the #13 ranked Owen Sound Junior Selects, 2-1 behind the pitching of Sean Kelly. The Lightning played the #4 ranked Chicago/NY team tough, falling 1-0, with the game’s lone run coming home in the bottom of the 6th inning on a sac fly. Chicago/NY pitcher Jeremy Manley tossed a no-hitter against the Lightning, striking out 15 while walking none. The lone base runner for the Lightning was Adam Saylor, who reached on an error in the 4th.

In their first game of the tournament, on Friday night, the Lightning competed well against the #6 ranked host, the Midland Explorers, falling 4-1. A three run outburst in the 5th by Midland was the difference in that game. With two wins over higher ranked teams in recent weeks (#23 Ashland, 9-2 over Memorial Day), and now the win over #13 ranked Owen Sound, look for the Lightning to move up in the next set of rankings.

Chicago Bandits set to square off live on ESPN2

ELGIN, Ill. – The Chicago Bandits and the USSSA Pride are set to square off in a “West Texas Showdown,” live on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. central time on Saturday June 12. The live ESPN2 game is a new step for the NPF and an exciting move for the league and its respective teams. This special event will be game four of a five game series and is expected to showcase a pitching matchup of Jennie Finch (Bandits) versus Cat Osterman (Pride) – two of the game’s most notable players.”

Lefty Cat Osterman will be in the circle for the USSA Pride on ESPN2 today against Jennie Finch and her Chicago Bandits team

“I think it’s a huge deal for the team, the league and the players to get some exposure,” said Aaron Moore the General Manager of the Chicago Bandits. “The success of the Women’s College World Series should help us attract a great audience for the game.”

The Bandits, who ended the 2009 season with a 27-12 record, fell at the hands of the USSSA Pride in the first round of last year’s National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) playoffs.

While the Bandits have yet to match up against anyone this season, the Pride recently completed a five game sweep of the Venezuela National Team in exhibition play. In a come-from-behind win the Pride defeated Venezuela 4-2 last Sunday, June 6 to win all five of their exhibition games heading into their season opener.

The Pride ended last season fourth in the NPF with a 16-24 record and were the eventual runner-up in the 2009 NPF Championship Series, losing to the Rockford Thunder in a best of three game series.

The season opening series will be highlighted by an All-Star pitching match-up between Jennie Finch of the Bandits and Cat Osterman of the Pride.

“It’s an opportunity to showcase two of the games greatest pitchers,” said Moore, “And it’s something that will excite the fans.”

Omar Vizquel Passes Lou Gehrig on All Time Hit List

June 12th, 2010

Chicago White Sox shortstop Omar Vizquel homered and pulled off a successful suicide-squeeze bunt in a winning effort Thursday, June 10. It was his 2,724th career hit, which tied him for 54th on the all-time list, with fellow switch hitter Roberto Alomar. The name of the player he passed? The immortal Lou Gehrig.

He is now tied for 4th (with Alomar) on the all time hit list for switch hitters, with only Pete Rose, Eddie Murray and Frankie Frisch above him. He needs 25 hits to reach the top 50 on the all time hit list.

As good a baseball player as Omar is, he is equal as a person. Some photos at the link of Omar hosting a group of Special Olympics kids at spring training a few years back when he was with the SF Giants, a trip that I was fortunate to tag along on. Photos
