2010 AAU Roster # 3 – Italian Athletic Club – CA USA

January 5th, 2010

Update/Editor’s Notes: January 5, 2010: Ian Fehrman to Italian Athletic Club for AAU International Tournament

The Italian Athletic Club added a big stick to their already potent lineup today, with Team Canada’s Ian Fehrman joining the California based squad in Orlando. Fehrman had a huge ISF World Championship series in Saskatoon this past summer, with:

-most hits in the round robin (15)
-most hits in the championship round (8)
-highest batting average in round robin for players with 20 or more AB’s (.517, 15-23)
-highest batting average in championship round (.727, 8-11)
-most home runs in the round robin (4)
-most home runs in the championship round (2)
-most RBI in the championship round (5)
-3nd in RBI in round robin (13, behind only Thomas Makea’s 15 and Jarrad Martin’s 14)

Fehrman was the key to Team Canada’s come-from-behind win over Team USA at the 2009 ISF World Championships, with a home run (cutting the lead to from 4-0 to 4-2) and double (that gave Canada the lead 5-4), finishing the game with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Editor’s note: Readers will recall Italian Athletic Club as the 2008 ASA “A” National champions. That club was led by 2008 ASA “A” National MVP Tony Peeples, while this one will have imported Canadian talent in the circle in Sean Whitten and young Derek Mayson. Both were members of Team Canada’s bronze medal team. Whitten had an outstanding 2009 ISC World Tournament, helping the Midwest Stampede to a fourth place finish, and earning second team All World honors.

Marty Grant bows out on top

December 31st, 2009

By DAVID DAWKINS – The Marlborough Express

The Southern Pride men’s softball team gave veteran pitcher Marty Grant a fitting send-off, finishing the National Fastpitch Championships in Christchurch with a 2-1 win over Auckland yesterday.

The veteran Black Sox hurler, pitching in his final top-level representative match after a career spanning three decades, was in commanding form on the mound and got just enough support from his batters to leave with the win.

Dunedin’s Scott Cartwright – who finished as the men’s tournament’s top batter – drove in both runs, while Grant stifled the Auckland offence as Southern finished the tournament in fifth place.

Marlborough’s Ryan Schollum caught the game for Grant, while also laying down two important bunts, while Jordan Tulloch had a tidy match at second base in his first start of the tournament in the infield.

Earlier, Southern missed out an a place in the semis after their appeal over a mid-tournament rule change was turned down. Manager Hamish Fletcher said the team was disappointed the ruling didn’t go their way, but instead of lodging a further appeal decided to let their on-field play do the talking.

The Pride finished the tournament with two wins from eight games and were in contention in three others. Fletcher said the team was pleased with how they played and improved throughout the week, with both their wins coming in the last two days.

Wellington took out the national title with a 7-0 five-inning win over Canterbury in the final, their first national provincial title since 2006.

The Southern women couldn’t finish on a high, dropping their final game to Wellington 0-10 to also place fifth.

Wellington jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after two innings to put the match beyond doubt.

Southern were able to make consistent contact with the bat, but couldn’t find gaps in the field, managing just four hits – one to Marlborough’s Anthea Stringer.

Stringer had a consistent tournament with the bat, reaching base in most games, while also playing high-quality defence at second base.

Hutt Valley took out their fourth consecutive national women’s title when they beat Auckland 6-0 in the final.

Results:

Men:

Canterbury 13 Hutt Valley 11, Wellington 2 Canterbury 1, Hutt Valley 2 North Harbour 1. Play-off for fifth: Southern Pride 2 Auckland 1. Final: Wellington 7 Canterbury 0.

Final standings: Wellington 1, Canterbury 2, Hutt Valley 3, North Harbour 4, Southern Pride 5, Auckland 6.

Awards: Top batter: Scott Cartwright (Southern Pride). Top pitcher: Thomas Cameron (Wellington). Most valuable player: Gareth Cook (Canterbury).

Women:

Wellington 10 Southern Pride 0, Auckland 5 Canterbury 1. Play-off for third: Wellington 1 Canterbury 0. Final: Hutt Valley 6 Auckland 0.

Final standings: Hutt Valley 1, Auckland 2, Wellington 3, Canterbury 4, Southern Pride 5.

Awards: Top batters: Tuhi Cooper (Auckland), Brooke Cutting (Wellington). Top pitcher: Megan Farrell (Wellington). Most valuable player: Cindy Potae (Hutt Valley).

ISF Umpschool Launched Online

December 29th, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ISF UMPSCHOOL LAUNCHED ONLINE

New Web initiative provides study guides, publications, and other resources

PLANT CITY, FLORIDA (USA)—Continuing its commitment to maintaining the highest level of officiating, softball’s world governing body has today launched ISF UmpSchool in cooperation with RuleBox Software. The online resource provides men and women access to umpire publications, practice tests, and other tools for becoming a world class on-field official for the game.

“As umpires, we continually strive to know the rules better so that we give our best when on the field. ISF UmpSchool places a lot of learning tools in one spot so that you can brush up on your rule knowledge and umpire mechanics and systems,” said International Softball Federation Director of Umpires Bob Stanton. “With UmpSchool you will have access to practice tests that you can design yourself; to the Official Rules, the Case Book, and the new Umpire Manual as well as the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-umpire systems. This is truly a great opportunity for the ISF to deliver its umpire materials and have it all received in one place. This is indeed a step forward in our umpiring program.”

Included among the contents in ISF UmpSchool are the 2010-2013 Official Rules of Softball, the ISF Umpire Manual, and the ISF Case Book. The one-year fee to register is only USD$15.00 (fifteen dollars).

For the head of umpiring at the national governing body for softball in the ISF member countries there are administrative tools including the ability to log in and monitor the progress of ISF UmpSchool registered users to see what areas of the game need more teaching in that nation.

“We are excited to be working with the ISF to provide umpires around the globe with access to ISF UmpSchool,” said Eric Newmark, President of RuleBox Software. “This is a great new opportunity for all umpires to enhance their knowledge of the game, increase their involvement in the sport, and further their career as an umpire.”

Effective immediately, ISF UmpSchool can be reached by single-clicking on the ad for it in the right-hand column on any page in the Umpiring section of www.ISFsoftball.org or by heading directly to http://www.ruleboxsoftware.com/isf.aspx.
