DAY 4 REPORTNL in control at Junior Men’s championship

MEDIA OFFICERSUMMERSIDE – Newfoundland and Labrador Kelly’s Pub Canadians are in the driver’s seat with a perfect 5-0 record at 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s fast pitch championships. The Canadians beat the East Hants Henchmen 3-2 and were losing 2-1 in the bottom of the third before all games were postponed due to heavy trains.
Ontario three, Simcoe, were leading New Brunswick’s Miramichi Vics 11-1 in the third inning as well. In their first game of the day, Ken Gosse’s two run single in the fourth inning stood up as the winner in the come-from-behind 3-2 win over the East Hants Henchmen, the Nova Scotia representatives. Gosse came to bat with pinch runner Matt Hill on third and Mark Lewis at second abse and two out. The shortstop then waited for his pitch, a low inside drop ball, and he got it. Gosse made no mistake, sending the pitch up the middle to center field, plating Hill and Lewis with the tying and eventual game winning runs. “This was a big win for us, we needed it,” Gosse said. “It’s good to pull out that W.” The defending champions have another big test later Wednesday against the Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks at 6 p.m. The win is also setting up a very pivotal game between them and Ontario One reps, Scarborough Wolverines, Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the final round robin game – a game that could determine first place.
Lewis (1-1, double, walk), Stephen Strapp (3-4) and Jon Kane (1-2) were offensive power for N.L. East Hants’ hits came from Andy Chase (1-4, two RBI), Aaron Harvey (1-4, run scored), Laurie Isenor (1-3), Pat Stewart (1-3 ) and losing pitcher Adam White (1-2). Sean Cleary went the complete game, fanning 14 batters and walking just two batters. White went five innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walking three and striking out one. Cory Avery went two innings in relief, facing seven batters.
Richard no hits N.B.Pierre Richard pitched six innings of no hit ball and Matt Dawson (2-4) stole two bases and drove home two runners as the host P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins mercied the New Brunswick Miramichi Vics 7-0. Richard struck out seven and walked two in picking up the win. Devon Praught (1-3, two RBI), Ryan Gallant (2-4, run scored, double), Jeremy McKinnon (1-3, RBI) were P.E.I’s top batters. Jeremy Regan went two and one third innings in taking the loss, allowing on run on one hit, walking four and fanning one. Shane Benjamin and Brandon Gorman pitched in relief. Putham tosses one hitterAndrew Putham pitched a complete game one hitter and Brandon Horn scored once and drove in one as the Scarborough Wolverines blanked Elmira Advance Millwright 4-0 in a battle of Ontario teams Wednesday afternoon. Ryan Jaynes (2-3, RBI), Rob Clayton (1-2, run scored, RBI triple) and Cameron Haulk (1-3, run scored) led the attack. Ben Wideman’s single in the fifth inning broke up the perfect game Putham had been throwing to that point. Dan Martin threw five innings allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and sitting down two. Ryan Shannon went an inning in relief surrendering one hit. Scarborough improved to 5-1 while Elmira dropped to 3-3.Avery blasts N.S. past QuebecCory Avery helped his own cause, blasting a towering two-run home run in the sixth inning about 350 feet as the East Hants Henchmen rallied from a 3-2 deficit to take their game with Quebec 4-3 Wednesday afternoon.
Avery (2-4, two runs scored, triple) also struck out five in going the distance allowing three runs on five hits. John Gunn (2-3, RB), Laurie Isenor (1-3, RBI double) and Andy Chase (1-2, two runs scored). Mathieu Benoit (1-1, RBI), Charles Hebert (1-3, run scored, RBI, stolen base), Mathieu Lessard (1-3, double) and Pascal Gonthier (1-2, triple, run scored). Francis LeClair threw a stellar game in his fourth outing, but came away winless yet again. He struck out 13 batters walked one and allowed four runs on just six hits.
