NEWFS TIGHT “D” WINS TWICE –

MEDAL MARCH IN MORNING

Riding on the shirt-tails of Newfoundland’s gold medal at the Softball Canada Junior Nationals last month in Owen Sound ON, Canada’s youngest province is within a single win of capturing a medal at the Senior Nationals. St. John’s NL Kelly’s Pub Canadians won twice yesterday, parlaying four runs into a pair of wins, qualifying for Sunday’s “final four”, and eliminating neighboring Maritimers Charlottetown PEI and Brookfield NS. P Darryl Tilley handcuffed Fawcetts, scattering five hits and striking out 11. Fellow P Sean Cleary completed the sweep dulling the Elks horns with a tidy one-hitter, and striking out 15. Sunday’s objective – break-up the perceived Ontario “Medal Cartel” and bring Gold/Silver or Bronze back to “The Rock”. The “medal mission” starts at 10 am when Kelly’s Pub meets the Jarvis First Ontario Gamblers – should be a dandy!

AROUND THE PARK

A reliable source asks fans to guess which American League baseball player once sold 50/50 tickets at a few major fastball tournaments in the US and Canada – answer at end of this column….What a great atmosphere through eight days of sunshine (okay, a smittering of rain last Sunday) as Tournament leaders Bill Horne and Tom Edie, complemented by a team of 200+ volunteers, successfully hosted a third Canadian National Championship in the last eleven seasons. Smiles abounded everywhere, and fans were treated to awesome Elgin County hospitality. Well done St. Thomas!….Adding to the atmosphere was Bruce Smith and his piano accordion – “Take me out to the Ball Game” – encouraged bleacher and beer tent karaoke. Diversity of song selections was evident with the strains of Queen’s “We Will Rock You”… good touch Bruce – come and join Walter Ostanek Oktoberfest style for the 2011 ISCs in Kitchener….. Just who contacted the weatherman? Anyone taking credit for the perfect fastball weather conditions is welcome on future hosting committees…… Speaking of 50/50 ticket sellers, don’t forget to check your pockets and purses for two unclaimed 50/50 draws – Draw #2 – 00822 and Draw #4 – #01564……

ANSWER – The 2006 American League batting champion, as a youngster helped to sell 50/50 tickets with his father George at several ISC tourneys in 1990s… Justin Morneau, a native of New Westminster, BC, no longer needs to sell 50/50 tickets, or win a 50/50 draw as his MLB salary for 2009 is a cool $11,600,000.
