Omar Vizquel Passes Lou Gehrig on All Time Hit List

Chicago White Sox shortstop Omar Vizquel homered and pulled off a successful suicide-squeeze bunt in a winning effort Thursday, June 10. It was his 2,724th career hit, which tied him for 54th on the all-time list, with fellow switch hitter Roberto Alomar. The name of the player he passed? The immortal Lou Gehrig.

He is now tied for 4th (with Alomar) on the all time hit list for switch hitters, with only Pete Rose, Eddie Murray and Frankie Frisch above him. He needs 25 hits to reach the top 50 on the all time hit list.

As good a baseball player as Omar is, he is equal as a person. Some photos at the link of Omar hosting a group of Special Olympics kids at spring training a few years back when he was with the SF Giants, a trip that I was fortunate to tag along on. Photos
