JRW C Squad at ASA MFP Class ?? Nationals

Louis Park, Stockton, California……JRW C Squad of Yakima, Washington went 1-2 for a 33rd place finish out of 65 teams at the ASA MFP Class A ?? Nationals. This National was called a Class C tournament so it would be eligible for federal funding.

The rosters in this tournament had several “playdowners”. Included were two players from the OPEN Class SoCal Bombers, one of whom was second team All-American in this tournament. Another club had four All-Americans from last year’s A Nationals – two first teamers & two second teamers. A third club had a catcher who had been named All-World DB at the NAFA AA World Series. Two ex-Rainey players were each on a team. An infielder from Portland DeMarini’s OPEN team of 2003 played on still another team. And one OPEN Class player from Quaker Riversharks batted .600 with 12 RBIs in Stockton. Not surprising as he batted .389 in Super Pool play at the ISC World Tournament. Guess which team he played for and what award he received.

The good pitchers in Stockton were about Class B level, but there weren’t any OPEN or Class A pitchers at Louis Park.

Game One

JRW C Squad pitcher Craig Rasmussen allowed three Country Club Villa, San Jose, CA hits in T1, but it was three errors that allowed CCV to score 4 runs. Only one of the runs was earned.

In B1, JRW 2B Don Cawthron singled and RF Steve Drissel launched a 2-run homer. In B5, JRW SS Mike Parham and Don Cawthron both singled, a CCV error allowed one run to score and an RBI single by JRW C Jason Scheibner drove in the second run to tie the game at 4-4.

In T6, CCV scored three runs on four singles and a Sac Fly to go ahead 7-4, the final score. CCV Relief pitcher Jose Calderon shut JRW out for the last two innings.

For JRW, 2B Don Cawthron 2-4, 2 Runs; RF Steve Drissel I-4, 2 RBI, HR; and C Jason Scheibner 1-4, 1 RBI.

Game Two

In Friday’s game, the Albuquerque, NM Bulls scored 2 runs in B1 on a Walk, an outfield error and two singles.

In T2, JRW scored a run on two errors and LF Troy Grow’s single.

The Bulls scored two runs in B3 on a JRW error; two singles and a sac fly to go up 4-1.

In T4, the Bull pitcher lost his control, walking three batters and hitting a fourth. That action plus an RBI single by JRW SS Mike Parham gave JRW three runs to knot the game at 4-4.

JRW Pitcher Craig Rasmussen found a rhythm and allowed only two singles and no runs over the last 5 1/3 innings.

JRW jumped ahead 7-4 in T6 on C Jason Scheibner’s 2 RBI double and DP Tom Magers’ sac fly. In T7, JRW added two more runs on a 2 run monster homer by SS Mike Parham, providing a 9-4 victory and a 1-1 record.

Game Three

Saturday’s game was with the Stingers of Atlanta, GA. Manager Jim Williamson checked the line-up for any grandsons of players on the Atlanta teams he faced while playing for Champion YMCA as a college youth in his hometown of Canton, NC. No heredity on the Stinger team.

This game started out as a classic FP duel, scoreless for the first three innings. JRW turned two DP’s, JRW LF Troy Grow made a diving catch and the Stingers turned one DP.

In T4, The Stingers solved JRW pitcher Craig Rasmussen’s change-up. They had four singles, one double and two JRW errors at inopportune times to jump out to a 4-0 lead. After that, pitcher Rasmussen only allowed one single in the last three innings.

In B6, the usual rally inning for the JRW team, 1B Mike Parham tripled and 2B Don Cawthron walked. Parham scored on a sac fly that almost left the park. Cawthron tagged up, went to 2B on the sac fly and scored on C Jason Scheibner’s RBI double. With two out, JRW DP Tom Magers hit a hard grounder between SS and 3B. Stinger 3B John Kojinski dove for the grounder and snagged it, scrambled to his feet to throw Magers out, preventing the possible third run from scoring. In statistical parlance, this play would be credited as an ODP (Outstanding Defensive Play), i.e. a defensive play that turns the fortune of a game.

Down 2-4 in B7, Manager Jim used his pinch-hitters. With 2 outs, PH Steve Drissel (he of HR fame in the first game) hit the hardest line drive he has ever hit. However Stinger SS Mark Wofford successfully leaped for the drive, ending JRW’s stay in Stockton.
