White Sox back on track at Canada Cup

Tuesday July 6th

Victory today for the New Zealand women's softball team over Chinese Taipei
4-3 has seen the Kiwis put their Canada Cup campaign back on track in
Surrey, British Columbia.

The White Sox are looking to finish in the top four of their eight team
pool to qualify them for the championship playoffs later this week. Two
early losses in the tournament had put a dent in those plans but today's
upset win over Chinese Taipei has kept the Kiwi hopes alive.

The winning of the game today came in the top of the fifth inning when
Canterbury's Char Pouaka stepped up to the plate and delivered with the
bases loaded. Going into the fifth inning the Kiwis were down 3-1 and need
something special. A double from Pouaka made the difference as it cleared
the bases with Brooke Lockhart, Kiri Shaw and Kalala Faalogo all scoring to
put the White Sox ahead 4-3.

Chinese Taipei started the game strong picking up their first run in the
opening inning courtesy of an error in the New Zealand field. The White Sox
struck back to level the scores in the third inning with Brooke Lockhart
scoring on a double from Kalala Faalogo after getting on base via an error
in the field.

The tied scoreboard didn't last for long though with Chinese Taipei taking
the initiative back in the bottom of the third inning and then going
further ahead with another run in the bottom of the fourth.

The three run double from Char Pouaka in the fifth inning was the turning
point for the Kiwis as it put them in the lead for the first time in the
game and they refused to surrender it.

Pouaka was the star with the bat for the White Sox as she made the crucial
play when it really mattered in the fifth inning. Also strong with the bat
for the Kiwis were Kalala Faalogo, Fiona Timu and Brooke Lockhart who all
picked up one hit in the game.

Pitcher Ali Arnold started the game on the mound for New Zealand she faced
15 batters taking two strikeouts and giving up one hit, two runs and four
walks before being replaced in the third inning. Cynthia Fallowfield
replaced Arnold on the mound and did a good containing job to take the
White Sox to victory. Fallowfield faced 19 batters taking four strikeouts
and giving up four hits, one run and two walks.

The White Sox will be looking to continue their winning ways tomorrow when
they take on Colorado based club side Triple Crown Force at 4.30pm (NZT).
