Japanese Elite Team Defeat Canada



(Surrey, BC)  Team Canada



The Japanese Elite team took advantage of five team Canada errors to 
produce an 8-3 win at the 11th annual Canada Cup International Women’s 
Softball Tournament in Surrey, BC.



It was the speed of the Japanese runners that created many of their 13 hits 
– most of which were bunt single or infield hits.  Canada’s defense seemed 
uncharacteristically rattled by the their opponent’s Speed.  Kaila Holtz 
pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up 1 earned run, striking out 3 and walking 
one.  Ani Nyhus pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up no earned runs and while 
striking out one.  Holtz was tagged with the loss.



The highlight for Canada came in the first inning.  With Erin White on 
third base, Alison Bradley hit a home run over the centre field 
fence.  This gave Canada a temporary 3-1 lead.



The loss drops Canada’s record to 1-2.

In action earlier in the day, the Canadian Developmental Team got there 
first taste of top international competition when they were defeated 7-0 by 
China (ranked 4th in the world).  China’s pitchers Lixia Zhang and Wei Lu 
combined for a no hitter.  Megan Stastook was the only Canadian to reach 
base on a walk.



Callie Osborne pitched 2 and 2/3 innings for the loss and allowed 4 
runs.  Megan McKenzie completed the game for Canada on the mound.
