This past Sunday July 25,2004, the Oshawa City and District Softball
Association presented its annual All - Star game that was hosted by the
Markham Majors of the OCDSA. It was a beautiful day for the festivities.
The Home Run Derby winner was Blake Orr of the Scarborough Wolverines, who
beat out 10 other participants in the home run competition.
The recipient of the Iris Yahn Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contribution
to Softball was Howard Burkholder, the present playing coach of the
Stouffville Menno's. Howard has put in many years of service in the
softball world and has been recognized accordingly.
Chris Lovatsis of the Markham Majors threw the All - Star Game Ceremonial
first pitch.
The game itself was a well played 9 inning tilt that saw the North Division
beat the South Division in a squeaker 4 - 3.
Stouffville Menno's Brett Boyd 3b, led the offence for the North as he went
2/4, dbl, 1 rbi, 2 bb. Mike Haddon 1b, from the Mount Albert Mudhens
contributed a 2 out clutch double to left centre to cash Bradford Sox cf
Cam Fraser who had singled and Mike Samways, ss, of the Markham Majors that
had reached on an error. John Halbert c of the Mount Albert Mudhens had
an rbi single, bb,while Bradford's Dennis Smith and Markham Major's Brent
Gram contributed singles.Scott Evans of the Stouffville Menno's struck out
6 batters in his 3 innings of work. Dennis Smith got the start and the win.
The South's offence was from the Scarborough Wolverine's 3b Ryan Sharpe,
2/4, rbi; 2b Matthew Dasilva, 2/4, 1 run and c Tyler Robinson who had a
solo line drive home run in the sixth.off of Byron Baronieski. Toronto
Champion Indian's Norm Estabrooks ss, chipped in with a single, rbi.
Scarborough's Jeff Wilson struck out 6 batters in his 2 innings of work.
Claremont Rebel's John Sharpe took the loss.
The John Carnwith Trophy presentation went to the North Division for their win.
The North Division All Star Game MVP was Brett Boyd, while Jeff Wilson was
the representative selected from the South Division.
A big thank you to the Umpires from Zone 7 - Greg Pipher(p), Jon
Lieberman(1b) and Paul Speisman(3b), who donated their time for this
fastball showcase.
The many donated lucky draw prizes, beer tent and bbq hamburgers and
sausages also contributed to a very successful event.
Shelley Gram and his Markham Majors, plus Jim Spiers, OCDSA - VP, and the
rest of the OCDSA executive would like to thank all those that gave of
their time to make this years All Star game very successful.
