LEARN TO PLAY WENT TO CABBAGETOWN

Cabbagetown KidSport Event, Tuesday, July 27th, 2004

The Learn to Play/KidSport event was presented by two Program
Co-ordinators, Steph Sutton and Mike Samways.

Due to bad weather, they were forced inside to set up the batting net
and two tees. After kids in both lines had batted a couple of times,
they hit the ball, dropped the bat and then steped on the blastbase.
There is no question kid's love that blastbag.

There were roughly 200-220 kids throughout the day ranging in age from 5
to 14.

Due to the lack of room and the number of kids in a confined area, they
felt it best to simply do a mini-hitting clinic. In general, they would
begin each session by showing the kids the proper form for swinging,
including Learn To Play techniques like the flashlight in the belly
button. Starting with stance at the plate (where and how to stand),
followed by proper hand and arm position, stepping with front foot
straight ahead, trunk rotation (flashlight), and finishing with complete
follow-through. After showing the kids how, they got into 2 lines (1 per
tee) and as each batter came forward, the instructors went through each
step with the kids until they got the hang of it. Even during breaks
there were always kids wanting to swing even if they had been to the
station already. The stress balls were a huge hit. They were given
away as the kids were on their way to their next station and they were
flying around the gym all day.
