Game of the Day

Morden Bulldogs 2, Winnipeg Lighting 0

The Manitoba Jessicas showed up to play today, and what a duel it was.

The Morden Bulldogs and host team Winnipeg Lighting squared off today
in the first, but maybe not the last battle of Manitoba during this
championship.

The Provincial Champion Lightning was the team to beat coming into the
match after beating the Bulldogs in the provincials a month before.

Fans packed the stands at John Blumberg to take in this match of
rivals, almost evenly splitting their support between the teams.

Jessica Dyck pitched for Winnipeg, while Jessica Klassen threw the
heat for the Bulldogs, both sharing the number 21.

It may be that the two were fighting to be the best Jessica number 21
as the match quickly became a good, old-fashioned pitcher's duel.

It took until the third inning for number 7 for the Bulldogs, Jennie
Heminnger to score a run. Hemminger practically stole her way home
after getting on base with a single, then stealing second, third, and
sliding home after the Lightning catcher, Amanda Carter, lost the ball
in the dirt.

A scary moment came in the fourth as Winnipeg's number 10, Lindsay
Landles, took a shot to the bridge of her nose after popping a ball
off her own bat. After a short time on the ground and some cheering
from her teammates, Lendles returned to finish off her round at bat,
showing that these girls are as tough as any.

Both pitchers remained nearly perfect until the sixth, when Morden's
Klassen walked a batter. She was able to put her mistake to rest
after striking out the Winnipeg batter with her walked batter at third
base.

There wouldn't be another run until the seventh, when the Bulldog's
Megan Dyck, number 27, drove the ball straight up the middle for a
single. Allison Smyth pinch ran for Dyck and would come in to score
of a ball Winnipeg's Mindie Morrow made a courageous dive for, but
narrowly missed.

The Lightning's Jessica Dyck put up strong numbers in the losing
effort, allowing only two runs and six hits with as many strike outs
in a tournament that has seen many slugfests.

But, it was Bulldog Jessica Klassen who took home the win and a player
of the game award, giving up only one hit and striking out 12.
"It was very satisfying," Klassen said about taking the match over
their keystone rivals. "They are one of the higher teams to beat."

Klassen didn't pitch at the provincials, but said the rivalry was a
factor in leading the Bulldogs to their best game of the tournament so
far.

"Everyone was very focused today, very into the game," Klassen says.

"(The win) certainly brought our team up a lot, gave us some
confidence," Klassen says. "I think we'll do good."
