Day 3 (Friday, Aug. 6) 2004 Bantam Girls Canadian Fast Pitch
Championships

Day 3 brought overcast skies and cool winds to the championships,
which have otherwise enjoyed fine weather.

Today is the final day of round robin play, seeing teams jockeying for
spots in tomorrow’s playoff rounds. The last two teams in each pool
will end their weekends early, giving them plenty of time to warm up
in the hot tubs at the hotel. The other eight teams will move on to
play across their pools.

Tomorrow’s playoffs will have the first place team from each pool play
the second place team of the opposite pool. Third place teams will
also cross over to play fourth place teams in the opposite pool

The winners of the 1-2 games will get byes into the final, while the
loser will play the winner of the 3-4 games to have a chance to get
back on track.

Tie breakers, if necessary, will take place tomorrow morning before
the start of the playoffs at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s rounds will set the matches for Sunday, when a national
champion will be determined.

Game of the Day

Chingaucousy Cougars ‘88 7, Westman Invasion 0

Home may not always be an advantage, especially if your team is from
Manitoba.

The Westman Invasion got treated to the worst weather of the
tournament as they took home field against the Chingaucousy
Cougars ‘88 of Ontario in battle to stay on top of their pool, both
teams with a record of three wins and one loss.

Gusty winds driving down the first base line brought chills and fly
balls as players and fans braced for a tough game.

Both teams struggled to get hits through the first two innings. The
first hit of the game was a pop fly that the wind carried backward,
nearly dropping it in the stands.

The first recorded hit of the game came as a infield bouncer hit by
the Invasion’s number eight, Ashley Neufeld, which was quickly picked
up by the Cougar’s second base and thrown to first for the out.

The invasion would load the bases there in the first, but, as would be
an unfortunate theme, could not capitalize with some needed hits.

The Cougars would be first to strike in the third, punching in a run
after some aggressive base running by number 13, Ashleigh Sammut. The
inning ended with Chingaucousy’s Carolyn Beniuk poised at third base.

Taking the wind into account, the Cougars used a combination of hard
base running and sacrifice hits in the infield to put bodies on the
bases.

Their hard work payed off in the fourth when Rachel MacLeod, number 43
for the Cougars, turned a ball deep into left field with a bit of wind
behind it, driving in three runs and putting herself on third base for
a big triple that broke open the game for her team.

“I went with the pitcher, otherwise it would have been a grounder,”
the import from Windsor said about her hit, noting that she doesn’t
usually chase after pitches.

MacLeod would later be batted in herself off another sacrifice r.b.i.,
putting Chingaucousy up by seven.

The Invasion weren’t able to come back with a rally despite hot bats.
Westman batters weren’t able to put themselves on base to build
momentum, seeing inning after inning of solid hits followed by tag ups
at first.

The Cougar’s lead was enough to invoke the mercy rule in the sixth,
taking the decision that keeps them on top of the Red pool heading
into the last set of games in the round robin.
