THE FARM TAVEN AND  BROKEN BOW  ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP OF ASA MEN’S MAJOR 
FAST PITCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

SOUTH BEND, IN – The  Farm Tavern of Madison, WI, defending ASA national 
champion, and the Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE  will decide the ASA 
Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship for 2004 here Sunday morning 
at 10 at the Belleville Complex.
Broken Bow, which was sent into the losers’ bracket by The Farm Tavern 
2-0  in the semis, will need to win the first game to force the if 
necessary game because The Farm Tavern is undefeated (4-0)  in the double 
elimination tournament.
Last year in Midland, MI The Farm Tavern  won its first ASA national title 
undefeated (5-0) and has extended that streak to nine, including a 6-0 win 
over Circle Tap of Green Bay, WI in the winners’ bracket final. Circle Tap 
came out of the losers’ bracket to face The Farm Tavern in last year’s 
championship and lost 4-0.
After losing to the Farm Tavern, Broken Bow has won three consecutive games 
in the losers’ bracket  and is 6-1 overall entering  Sunday’s championship.
It has gotten consistent pitching, allowing only six runs in seven 
games,  and an offense paced  by  outfielder Steve Schott (.571, 12-for-21, 
seven runs scored), to advance to the ASA Major Fast Pitch National 
Championship for the first time.
The Spirit also is the first Nebraska team ever to advance to the 
championship of the Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship.

Loser’s Bracket Final

Broken Bow broke out to  a 1-0 in the top of the third when outfielder 
Steve Schott doubled to right center, advanced to third on Ray Reinagel’s 
sacrifice and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Frank Perez. The 
one run held up as Broken Bow advanced to Sunday’s championship to face The 
Farm Tavern.
Circle Cap threatened  in the fourth when Tom Montgomery and Jess Ellstad 
singled with one out. They, however, never crossed home as Gerald Muizelaar 
struck out the next two batters, including pinch hitter Dewey Dyck.
Right-hander  Muizelaar  (4-0) went the distance in the circle, fanning 12. 
Robbie O’Brien fanned 13 and walked one in a losing effort, allowing six hits.
Steve Schott led Broken Bow with a double and a single in three trips to 
the plate. He also walked. Tom Montgomery also had a pair of singles in 
three trips for Circle Tap.
After being runner-up last year, Circle Tap placed third and finished with 
a 3-2 record.

Winner’s Bracket final

The Farm Tavern 6, Circle Tap 0

For the second year in a row, The Farm Tavern advanced to the championship 
of the ASA Men’s Major  Fast Pitch Championship by defeating Circle Tap of 
Green Bay, WI,  6-0, hitting five homers off losing hurler Dewey Dyck.
Dyck allowed seven hits, striking out 13 and walking 3 as Circle Tap 
dropped into the loser’s bracket to await the winner of the The 
Bull/Townline-Broken Bow Spirit game.
Shortstop David Boys hit the first of the five Farm Tavern homers to 
start  the game and Todd Twachtmann increased the lead to 2-0 with a solo 
blast in the second inning. Todd Budke upped the lead to 4-0 with Boys 
aboard in the third inning with a blast over the right field fence, 
carrying well over the 300-foot mark. After one out in the fifth inning, 
Rob Gray hit another solo roundtripper to up the lead to  5-0 and Paul 
Lynch, the no. 9 hitter, competed the dinger parade with a solo shot 
leading off the seventh inning.
Paul Algar started in the circle for The Farm Tavern but lasted only 1 1/3 
innings before Dean Holoien entered the game in the second inning with the 
bases loaded and struck out the next two batters to end Circle Tap’s 
threat. Algar fanned three batters and walked one, allowing two hits.
Holoien (3-0, 51 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings)  finished with 12 strikeouts 
and allowed a pair of hits, including a lead-off triple by Circle Tap left 
fielder Chris Miljavac, but Holoien got the next three batters in order to 
end the threat. Speedster Miljavac had two of the four Circle Tap hits, 
including an infield single in the third inning.
The Farm has now won nine games in a row in ASA National Championship and 
will hope to make it an even 10 in Sunday’s championship game starting at 
10 a.m.

Winner’s  Bracket

Circle Tap 7, Fred’s Interiors 1

Right-hander Robbie O’Brien hurled a two-hitter and fanned 17  Saturday in 
advancing Circle Tap of Green Bay, WI to the winner’s bracket final of the 
ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship at the Belleville Softball 
Complex.

Now 2-0 in the championship, O’Brien allowed a pair of singles by Nick 
Needham in pitching Circle Tap to its third consecutive win. Circle Tap got 
six hits off two Fred’s hurlers, with starter and losing hurler Al Rebling 
allowing five and relief hurler Tim Jacobs one. Jacobs replaced Rebling in 
the bottom of the third with one out.
Circle Tap took an early 1-0 lead and Adam LaLonde increased it to 4-0 with 
a three-run homer in the bottom of  second inning. Circle Tap closed out 
its scoring with three runs in the third inning including a two-run triple 
by third baseman Tom Montgomery.

The Farm Tavern 2, Broken Bow 0

Dean Holoien allowed one hit, drove in a run and struck out 18 in advancing 
The Farm Tavern of Madison, WI to the winner’s bracket final. 
Holoien’s  bloop RBI single to left field  in the  fourth inning gave the 
Farm a 1-0 lead and  third baseman Todd Budke added an insurance run with a 
solo homer in the 6th inning off Doug Middleton. Middleton replaced Broken 
Bow Spirit starter and losing hurler  Frank Cox in the sixth inning. Cox 
hurled five innings, striking out six, allowing three hits and walking two.

Holoien, now 2-0 in the championship allowed only one hit­a single by Steve 
Schott in the 3rd inning.
In two games, Holoien has struck out 39 batters, including an ASA 
seven-inning game record of 21 Friday. He also has distinguished himself 
at-bat and is batting .333 (3-for-12) with three RBIs and one home run.

Loser’s Bracket

The Bull/Townline 7,  Blackhawk Athletic Club 6

Competing in its first ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship, 
The Bull/Townline of DePere, WI eliminated the Blackhawk Athletic Club 
of  Rockford, ILL.,  7-6, leaving six teams left from the original field of 
20 at the Belleville Softball Complex.
The Blackhawk Athletic Club finished 2-2 and in eighth place in the 
double-elimination event.

The  Blackhawk Athletic Club took a 1-0 lead before The Bull/Townline 
tallied five times in the second inning and twice more in the fourth inning 
on a two-run roundtripper by Trent Noe.  Chad Maxon had a solo homer in the 
third for Blackhawk AC.

Jeff Goologong, who replaced starter and winner Sebastian Gervasutti in the 
circle, had three hits in addition to hurling two innings. Gervasutti, now 
3-1 in his first ASA Men’s Major National, hurled five innings. He allowed 
three earned runs, walked three and struck out eight.
Joe Crouch lasted only the first inning ( four runs allowed) before losing 
pitcher Ray Reynolds replaced him to finish the game. Reynolds went six 
innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Bull/Townline is now 4-1 in the tournament, including a 7-0 forfeit win 
over the Separators of New Castle, IN, which failed to show.

Heflin Builders 4, HIS Construction 2

After going scoreless for five innings, the Heflin Builders of Ballston 
Lake, NY scored twice each in the sixth and seventh innings to advance in 
the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship at the Belleville 
Softball Complex, eliminating HIS Construction of Houston, TX 4-2, which 
finished 2-2 and in seventh place.

In the Heflin sixth, Steve Schucker drove home the first run with a double, 
scoring Bill McDonald who had tripled to open the inning. Schucker scored 
on a single by Jordan Taveras.

Steve Price, who started in the circle for Heflin, smashed a two-run homer 
to account for the final two runs.
HIS scored its first run in the sixth on a double by Brent Evans and a 
single by Fred Gegen. In the bottom of the seventh,  Mike Ramirez doubled 
to left field in the seventh, advanced to third on a single to right by 
Jason Darling and scored on Jeremiah Perez’ single to right field with two 
out. Elias Ugueto popped out to shortstop to end the game with runners on 
first and second.

Price, who was 2-for-3 (homer and double, two RBIs), hurled the first four 
innings, striking out six, walking none and allowing a pair of hits. Doug 
Sleep replaced Price and hurled the last three innings, allowing five hits 
and two earned runs in getting the win. He struck out one and walked none.
Rob Schweyer absorbed the loss in the circle, fanning nine batters, 
allowing five hits and four earned runs. He walked three.

Broken Bow, 7 Heflin Builders 2

Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE won its first game in the losers’ 
bracket Saturday, eliminating Heflin Builders of Ballston Lake, NY, 7-2.
In improving its record to 4-1, the Spirit pounded out 11 hits against two 
Heflin pitchers, loser and starter Paul Koert (5 innings, seven hits, five 
runs and four strikeouts) and Doug Sleep (two innings, four hits, and four 
strikeouts).
Steve Schott and Mike Dryer led the Broken Bow offense with the 39-year-old 
Schott hitting a triple and a solo homer (first inning) to drive in two 
runs. Dyer plated three runs with a double and a homer.
Gerald Muizelaar, now 3-0,  hurled five innings to get the win with Doug 
Middleton coming in to finish the game.
Blake Miller had a triple for Heflin Builders, which finished 4-2 and in 
sixth place.

The Bull/Townline 6, Fred’s Interiors 5

Scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, The Bull/Townline of 
DePere,WI rallied to eliminate Fred’s Interiors of Quad City, IA from the 
ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship Saturday at the Belleville 
Softball Complex.  Fred’s compiled a 2-2 record finishing fifth.
Quentin Matzner, who hurled 6 1/3 innings, took the loss, throwing a 
seventh inning wild pitch to bring across the game-winning run for The 
Bull/Townline (5-1). The Bull/Townline had tied the game on Tom Moen’s 
three-run homer in the fourth inning before falling behind 5-3 entering the 
seventh inning.
Jeff Goolagong hurled  4 2/3 innings to get the win with Sebastian 
Gervasutti starting and going 2  1/3 innings. Goolagong fanned eight 
batters and allowed five hits, allowing a pair of runs. Gervasutti allowed 
three runs and five hits, striking out three and walking two.

Broken Bow Spirit 1, The Bull/Townline

With the bases loaded, Mike Dryer was hit by a pitch thrown by losing 
hurler Sebastian Gervasutti in the sixth inning to bring across the game’s 
only,advancing Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE in the ASA Men’s Major 
Fast Pitch National Championship Saturday. Appearing in its first ASA 
national championship, The Bull/Townline finished fourth (5-2).
An error and two singles loaded the bases in the sixth inning for Broken 
Bow, which advanced to meet Circle Tap in the losers’ bracket final with 
the winner advancing to the championship game Sunday against The Farm 
Tavern. Diego Rico scored the game’s only run.
Frank Cox allowed one hits and fanned  15 batters. Gervasutti took the 
loss, (3-2) allowing three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.
