TWO RECORDS BROKEN IN 72nd ANNUAL MEN’S MAJOR FAST PITCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

SOUTH BEND, IN –Two records, one batting and one pitching, were broken
during the 72nd annual Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship, which
concluded here Sunday at the Belleville Softball Complex.
Dean Holoien, who hurled The Farm Tavern of Madison, WI, to its second
national title in a row by hurling a no-hitter in the championship game,
established a new record for most strikeouts in a seven inning game with
21, breaking the old record set in 1997 by Chris Wilson of Stoneham, MA. He
finished with 65 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings including 14 in the 6-0
championship game win against Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE.
The hard-throwing Holoien walked away with the Most Valuable Player and the
Herb Dudley Awards (outstanding pitcher). The last time a pitcher won the
MVP award was in 1988 when Peter Meredith and Mike Piechnik shared the
honor. It was Holoien’s first appearance in an ASA national and he
certainly made the most of the opportunity.
Tim Hatten of the Blackhawk Athletic Club of Rockford, IL broke the batting
record by hitting .667. (8-for-12). ASA National Hall of Famer Ted
Hicks, now living in Decatur, ILL., held the former record of .632, which
was established in 1978 when he was playing for Springfield, MO.
In repeating as national champion, The Farm extended its consecutive win
streak in ASA national championship play to 10, two behind the record.
