ISC Ready to roll in Fargo
Friday, August 13, 2004
The park is spectacular and so is the weather, and the ISC is ready to rock
and roll in Fargo, North Dakota.
Its been a couple of months since I have visited Fargo and the magnificent
ball park where the 2004 ISC World Tournament is being held and its even
more spectacular than I remember it. The organizers have turned this
lovely baseball park into a magnificent fastball park, complete with
another 12 rows of seating behind home plate, new dugouts for the two
teams, and in a setting any serious fan will appreciate.
The weather today, Friday, is a warm bright 71f with promise of a good week
ahead.
The umpires rolled in yesterday and checked out the facilities and were
totally impressed all the way around. I attended their meet and greet last
night and met a number of new umpires from all over the world, here to make
this yet another memorable event for the ISC. UIC Ron Brickman has brought
in a number of well-known umpires from all over Canada and the USA, as well
as New Zealand. It is a long way from Wanganui, New Zealand to North
Dakota, America but
that is the journey ahead for Kiwi umpire Lindsay Edwards as part of a new
exchange programme.
Several well known umpires from Canada are here, working the Big Show,
including Bob Henning from Surrey BC; Lou Davis from Nova Scotia, and Peter
Kluszcynski, Ed Otterman and Tim Whitlaw from Ontario. Full list of the big
blue:
1. John Voss Lancaster, California
2. Kevin Wallace Shipman, Illinois
3. Charlie Johnson Hitterdal, Minnesota
4. Scott Mair Winnipeg, Manitoba
5. Rick Havercroft Saginaw, Michigan
6. Jay McGivern Woodbury, Minnesota
7. Bob Henning Surrey, British Columbia
8. Ed Otterman Simcoe, Ontario
9. Lou Davis Truro, Nova Scotia
10.Lindsay Edwards Wanganui, New Zealand
11.Tim Whitelaw Kitchener, Ontario
12.Mark Rieber Mankato, Minnesota
13.Peter Kluszcynski Brampton, Ontario
14.Ron Adkins Modesto, California
Last evening, to christen the newly much renovated ball park, two
exhibition games were held.
This enabled the many volunteers to work with the new equipment and to give
the local fans and the early visitors (like Bruce Simpson of Alliston,
Ontatrio) a preview of the park.
It also gave the two teams visiting from Europe a chance to see what the
park is all about and to shake off the travel bugs.
In the first game, the home town did it up right, having the IS Knights
play against the Ballerup Vandals of Denmark. In an impressive opening
ceremony, the teams lined up on their respective 1st and 3rd baselines, and
one at a time, members from each team came to home plate to exchange pins.
Very impressive and well done!
I only have the score for the first game:
IS Knights: 3
Denmark: 0
In the second exhibition game of the evening, Fargo ND Bergstrom Black
Knights played the visiting Screenhouse Storks from The Hague, Netherlands.
Netherlands: 4
Black Knights: 4
Netherlands: 0.0.2.2.0.0.0.x.4.5.3
Black Knights: 0.0.0.0.1.0.3.x.4.4.2
Chad Klassen: 2.2 IP, 4H, 2R, 0ER, 2BB, 7K
Brian Rahman: 1 IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 2K
Darcy Byrne: 3.1 IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 5K
C: Brad Bibby
Jeff Ellsworth, HR in 5th inning.
2 run triple in the 7th, scoring Ron Sklebar and Steve Scott
(that is all I have from this game)
We will have complete details, game by game once the tournament starts today.
Stay tuned.
Next up, the ISC II.
