--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Better late than never, we're way overdue for a Senior fastball
report out of
Kitchener. The past few weeks has been busy, hence the delay
in reporting.
On the August long weekend, the Hallman Twin City Sting competed
in the
Ontario Elimination Tournament in Owen Sound Ontario. Game #
1 saw the Sting take
on their local rivals, the Innerkip Eagles. Solid pitching by
Paul Koert and a
two homerun effort by Dale Levy was what the Sting needed for
a 5 - 0 victory.
Don Scott finished up on the mound in relief of Koert.
Game # 2 matched the Jarvis Merchants against the Kitchener squad.
The game
turned into a classic pitchers battle with Jamie Simpson of the
Sting and Mike
Joseph of the Merchants holding both batting line-ups in check.
A Jason Daer
rbi single in the fifth was all that the Sting could muster in
a tightly fought
1 - 0 victory. Don Scott finished the game on the mound for the
Sting. After
giving up a leadoff triple in the seventh, Scott proceeded to
strike out the
next three for the save.
Game # 3 saw the Sting matched against the 2005 Canadian Championship
hosts,
the Union Storm. Again, it was the pitchers that stole the show.
Ron White's
solo homerun appeared to be enough for the Sting until Tex Lessard
hit a double
to score two for the Storm in the fifth. Storm pitcher, Trevor
Wardell held
the Sting off the rest of the way for the 2 - 1 victory. Paul
Koert with Scott
in relief pitched well for the Sting in this tough loss.
Game # 4 saw the Sting take on the Innerkip Eagles again in the
semi-final
game of the tournament. Pitching was the order of the day again
as Dan Skillings
of the Eagles and Jamie Simpson of the Sting gave up very few
hits between
them. Don Scott came in in relief for Simpson in the 7th and
gave up the tying
run to send this one to extra innings. In the 8th, a Bill Simmons
double and a
Dale Levy homerun sealed the 4 - 1 victory for the Sting and
sent the Hallman
squad to the finals for another shot at the Union Storm.
Game # 1 of the finals saw the Sting finally get their bats on
track as they
pounded out an 8 - 0 victory over the Storm to force a second
final game. Paul
Koert pitched the complete game victory for the Sting. Dan Beecroft
and Andy
Jackson pitched for Union. Dale Levy, Brian Stere and Jason Daer
homered for
the Sting.
Game # 2 of the finals pitted Wardell of the Storm against Simpson
of the
Sting. Again the bats fell silent and the pitching took over.
A Dale Levy rbi
double gave the Sting the lead only to see a bloop single into
right tie the game
for the Storm and send this one into extra innings. Troy Rick
singled home
the winning run for the Storm in the bottom of the ninth in this
tremendously
exciting Ontario Championship game. Wardell and Simpson both
pitched brilliantly
in this affair although both teams left many runners on base.

Uncharacteristic errors ( 5 ) and a lack of clutch hitting were
the difference in this one as
the Sting were forced to settle for the Silver Medals. The second
place
finish however was still good enough to vault the Kitchener Hallman
team to a berth
in the Senior Canadian Fastball Championships in Ste. Croix,
Nova Scotia from
Aug. 29 - Sept. 6. The Sting will join the Union Storm, Peterborough
Ricart
Pros and the Jarvis Merchants as Ontario's representatives at
this prestigious
National Championship event.
August 6 & 7 weekend saw the Sting take part in the Schneider's
International
Softball Congress Alliance League playoff tournament at Peter
Hallman
Ballyards in Kitchener, Ontario. In the round robin playoff format,
the Sting
defeated Jarvis 7 - 4, Palermo Athletics 4 - 3 and the Innerkip
Eagles 7 - 1. Jamie
Simpson picked up the victory on the mound against Jarvis while
Todd Winkworth
was the winning pitcher versus Palermo. Don Scott fired a gem
against Innerkip
to wrap up first place for the Hallman team in the playoff round
robin. This
meant a direct route to the one game final and a few hours to
relax. The
Palermo Athletics and their strong bats were the team to survive
the rest of the
elimination portion of the tournament and met the Sting in the
one game
championship final. Jamie Simpson took the ball for the Sting
and Gord " Hack " Scott
toed the rubber for the Athletics. In a tightly contested back
and forth
game, Brian Stere's two run homerun in the bottom of the fifth
proved to be the
difference as the Hallman Twin City Sting won the SISCA final
by a score of 5-3.
With the win and the league championship, the Sting also received
an
automatic berth to the 2005 ISC World Championships in Wisconsin.
The Hallman Twin
City Sting graciously accepted the berth for 2005 and look forward
to
representing the league and the province at next years Worlds.
It also appears that after
a closed door meeting with sponsor JIm Hallman and a Sting representative,

the one year experiment with the "new" Kitchener Senior Fastball
squad has been
successful enough that you may expect to see this Hallman family
sponsored
squad on the field again for the next few years. The team may
retain the former
Kitchener Hallman Twins name in 2005 and we now wait anxiously
to hear which
city will receive the ISC World Tournament as host in 2006. Once
again a huge
thank you to JIm Hallman and his family, from all of the players
and coaches of
the 2004 Hallman Twin City Sting. Without the Hallman sponsorship
and support,
we would not have been able to achieve on the field the things
that we have
achieved this passed season. Look for a full Hallman Senior fastball
report and
2004 wrap-up following the Senior Canadian Championships.
