Host Athletics off to rocky start at Bantams

ALBERTON, PEI
- The host Murphy's Ultramar Bantam Athletics find themselves in a deep
hole after day one with a pair of 8-0 defeats Thursday to open the 2004
Tignish Credit Union Bantam Boys Eastern Canadian championships in Alberton.
Alberton lost to Richmond and the Nova Scotia champion East Hants High Tide.
Against Richmond, Ryan Ferrish pitched a complete game no hit shutout, with
the only blemish being two walks he gave up.
Leading Richmond was Tyler Richard (2-3, run scored, two RBI), Brett
Praught (1-3, two runs scored).
Winning pitcher was Ferrish while Kyle Richards took the loss.
Against the High Tide, East Hants blew it open with a five-run outburst in
the third.
Leading the Tide were Bryan Gillis (1-2, run scored, two RBI), Zach Sill
(1-3, run scored), Justin Dillman (1-3, two RBI) and Matt Dillman (2-2, two
runs scored).
For the A's, Matt Campbell, Mike MacIsaacv and Mitch Morrissey were all 1-3.
Winning pitcher was Justin Dillman who went five innings striking out six,
walking one and allowing three hits.
Losing pitcher Mike MacIsaac went two and two-thirds innings giving up six
runs on four hits and one strikeout. Cody Gavin pitched one and one third
innings in relief allowing two runs, four hits and two strikeouts.
Express squeak by Storm
Chris Brown drove in the tying and game winning run as Napanee rallied for
a 3-2 win over Conception Bay South Storm.
Trailing 2-1 in the bototm of the seventh, Brown (2-2, walk) came to the
plate with runners on second and third and hit a hard single that brought
both runs around to score. Luc MacDonald (2-3, run scored) and Kyle
Arsenault (1-2, with the game winning run) also were tops in the nail
biting game.
For the Storm, Sean Quinlan (2-3, two RBI) got the Newfoundland and
Labrador # 2 reps out to a 2-0 third inning lead. Mike Nottle (2-3, run
scored) also contributed at the plate.
Winning pitcher Nick Brooks went seven innings allowing two runs on four
hits, walking three and striking out 11.
Losing pitcher Brent Skiffington blew the save opportunity by going one
inning allowing two runs on three hits. Andrew Murphy started the game,
pitching six innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one run and striking
out one.
Wolves claw Mariners in win
Navin Seelochand had a double, two runs scored and three RBI as the
Scarborough Sabrewolves used a five run third to their advantage in a 10-2
win over Musq. Hbr. Mariners on day one of the 2004 Tignish Credit Union
Bantam Boys Eastern Canadian Championship in Alberton.
The Wolves (Ontario Two) are making a strong statement early that they will
be there right to the championship game Sunday afternoon.
Leading the Wolves attack was Matt Martinello (2-4, double, run scored),
Dave Kinley (2-3, run scored, two RBI) and Matt Lowe (2-2, two RBI).
For Musq. Hbr, (NS 2) who tried to mount a late rally, Marcus Paris (2-3,
run scored) and Evan Baker (1-2, run scored) led the Mariners at the dish.
Both Musq. Hbr. Runs came off an error and passed ball.
Winning pitcher Chris Ramoutar went five innings allowing no runs on three
hits, walking two while fanning 11 batters.
Losing pitcher Thomas McKay, who was in Alberton last year with the Nova
Scotia entry at the peewee Eastern Canadians, went five getting shelled for
10 runs - seven earned - on 145 hits, walking four and striking out two.
McCarthy's triple earns Placentia win over N.B.
Andrew McCarthy hit a key seventh inning two-run triple as the Placentia
Lions Club (NL # 1) held off the New Brunswick All Star Flyers 6-2.
McCarthy (2-4, two triples) put the Placentia team ahead by four, an
insurmountable lead for a young and feisty Flyers squad.
Also leading at the dish was Jon Culleton (1-3, run scored), Johnny
O'Reilly (2-3, RBI, run scored, double) and Evan Green (1-2, RBI, run scored).
For the Flyers, Adam Warman (2-2, run scored), Shane Benjamin (2-4), Scott
McKillop (1-3) and CJ Price (2-4, run scored) were tops.
Winning pitcher Johnny O'Reilly went seven innings, allowing six hits,
three runs, two walks and striking out 11 batters.
Losing pitcher Kyle Ryan went the distance allowing seven hits, six runs,
three walks and striking out six.
