Hitmen sweep A's in

wet doubleheader

SUMMERSIDE - Wade Smith, Craig Manuel and Hugh John McIver carried the
offense as the Kinkora O'Shea's Pub and Eatery Hitmen swept both ends of a
doubleheader over the Alberton Arms Pub Athletics here Wednesday night.

The final regular season Source for Sports Men's Intermediate Fast Pitch
League games were played in wet weather and field conditions at Queen
Elizabeth Park's VIV Field in Summerside.

In Game one, which was shortened from seven to five innings, the Hitmen
were led at the plate by Manuel (1-2, home run, two RBI, run scored), Smith
(2-2, run scored, two RBI), Peter McCardle (2-3, double, run scored) and
Art MacDonald (1-2, run scored).

For Alberton, Kyle Fraser (2-3, run scored, two stolen bases), Troy
Ellsworth (1-2, double, run scored, RBI), Mitch Hardy (1-2, RBI triple) and
Erroll Kinch (1-2).

The A's trailed 2-0 before a third inning rally in the bottom of the third,
which was carried from a huge game-saving catch by left fielder Kyle Fraser.

Peter McCardle hit an Ellsworth offering that had eyes for extra bases, but
Fraser sacrificed his body and slid on the wet outfield to dive and make a
great catch to stop the rally and save two or more runs.

A missed catch in right field allowed the Hitmen to score three runs in the
fifth to get the lead and win the game.

Winning pitcher Craig Manuel went the complete game, allowing six hits,
walking none and striking out 11 batters. Losing pitcher Troy Ellsworth
went five innings giving up five runs - four earned - on eight hits.

The second game saw the A's jump out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by
Erroll Kinch (1-1) that plated Mitch Hardy (1-1, run scored).

However, it wasn't enough as a two-run double by Hugh John McIver (1-1)
scored Wade Smith (1-1, run scored) and pinch runner Matt Dawson, who was
running for Pat McIver(1-1, run scored), with the tying and game winning
runs to end the ball game and give Kinkora 25 wins on the season.

Also contributing for the A's, in the game called after one inning due to
wet field conditions, was Adam Boudreault (1-1, stolen base).

Winning pitcher Craig Manuel went one inning allowing three hits and
fanning one batter. Losing pitcher Troy Ellsworth went two-thirds of an
inning, allowing two runs, three hits, and facing four batters.

Both teams didn't want to risk injuries to any regulars with the league
championship tourney just days away, starting Friday and running until
Sunday at VIV Field.
