Hitmen, Twins, Athletics advance to semi-finals Sunday morning

SUMMERSIDE - Six teams began and now four remain in the quest for the 2004 
Source for Sports Men's Fast Pitch League championship.

Saturday action saw the St. Louis Storm take first place with a 3-0 record 
on the backs of back to back 7-1 and 5-4 (in extra innings) wins over Moase 
Plumbing and Heating Midgets and the Summerside Twins. The Storm and Twins 
will meet in the first semi final game at 12 p.m. Sunday.

Other action saw the Alberton Athletics hammer the Wellington Arsenault 
Sawmill Jacks 12-0 in five innings before handing the Kinkora Hitmen an 8-0 
setback in six innings in the late game at VIV Field in Summerside. The 
Hitmen beat the Twins 7-0 in five innings also.

The Jacks picked up their first win of the tourney with an 11-0 thrashing 
of the Midgets in an earlier game Saturday.

In the Storm's two games, theyw ere led by Mitch Turner (2-3, run scored, 
double, two RBI), Stephen Donahoe (2-3, two RBI, walk), Brian Greenan (1-1, 
run scored) and Jon Broderick (2-2, three runs scored, two walks, RBI) in 
the win over the Midgets.

For the Midgets, Ryan Gallant (2-2, RBI), Ryan Ferrish (1-3, triple, run 
scored) and Greg Paynter (1-2, walk) led at the dish.

Winning pitcher Wayne Wilkie went the complete game, allowing four hits, 
one walk and striking out five.

Losing pitcher Jeremy Gallant went five innings, allowing five runs on 
seven hits, walking four and striking out one. Pierre Richard pitched an 
inning surrendering two unearned runs on two hits, and striking out two.

The Storm then looked to carry that momentum into their second game of the 
day, immediately. In what turned out to be a seesaw affair, lasting nine 
innings, the Storm prevailed to go to 3-0 and would eventually clinch first 
in the round robin.

Leading St. Louis, who took leads of 1-0, and see that evaporate three 
times before pulling out the 5-4 win, was Brian Greenan (1-4, game winning 
run scored), Mitch Turner (3-4, two singles, home run, run scored), Jon 
Broderick (2-5, RBI, game winning double to right field scored Greenan from 
first with winning run) and Larry Gallant (2-3).

For the Twins, Daryl Yeo (2-5, two runs scored, RBI), Ian Power (3-4, two 
RBI) and Dale MacDougall (1-3, run scored).

Winning pitcher was Jon Broderick who pitched two-thirds of an inning 
allowing one hit in relief of Jamie Betts. Betts went eight and one-third 
innings allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking two and 
striking out six.

Losing pitcher Scott Bridges went the complete game, allowing five runs on 
nine hits, and striking out four.

It seems this game didn't solve anything, as both teams will face off with 
one another again Sunday as in the first (St. Louis) vs. fourth 
(Summerside) place game for the rights to go to the championship game at 4 p.m.

A'S TAKE TWO!

The Athletics came into Saturday wanting to make a statement - and they 
sure left one scoring 20 runs while allowing the opposition none in two 
huge confidence-boosting wins.

First they handled the Wellington Jacks 12-0 then they mauled the Kinkora 
Hitmen 8-0, to go to 2-1, and get second place.

Against the Jacks, Mitch Hardy (2-3, home run, four RBI, two runs scored), 
Troy Ellsworth (2-3, three RBI, run scored), John Sentner (1-3, RBI) and 
Jeff Ellsworth (2-2, three runs scored, double, stolen base) were offensive 
contributors.

For Wellington, Gerald Gallant (2-3), Jean Aucoin (1-2), Jonathan Arsenault 
(1-1) led at the plate.

Mitch Hardy picks up the win in three innings of work, as Troy Ellsworth 
came on to pitch two innings relieve.

Losing pitcher was Jamie Perry who went two-thirds an inning before being 
yanked for Niel Arsenault, who went two and on-third innings before giving 
way to Shawn Gallant. Gallant, finished the game off.

Against the Hitmen, Alberton scored one in the second and two more in the 
third and never looked back en route to their regular season nemesis 8-0.

Leading Alberton was Troy Ellsworth (2-4, two runs scored, triple, three 
RBI), Kyle Fraser (2-3, two runs scored), Adam Boudreault (1-2, home run) 
and Chris Avery (1-3, double, RBI).

For the Hitmen, Peter McCardle (1-2) and Hugh John McIver (1-2) were the 
only batters to hit Hardy.

Hardy went six innings allowing just two hits, walked two and fanned seven. 
Losing pitcher Kevin Warren went the complete game, giving up the eight 
runs on nine hits, four walks and seven strikeouts.

These two teams meet again at 2 p.m. in what is sure to be a very 
entertaining and thrilling game.

JACKS WIN!

In Saturday's first game, Moe Cormier (2-3, walk, double, home run, five 
RBI)Jamie Caissie (3-3, two runs scored, RBI), Gerald Gallant (2-3, three 
runs scored, two RBI) were tops for Wellington against the Midgets

For Moase, John MacLennan (1-1) and Jeremy Reeves (1-2, double) were tops.

Winning pitcher Shawn Gallant allowed two hits in five innings, while 
sitting down five batters. Losing pitcher Shawn Bernard allowed 11 runs 
(nine earned) on nine hits, nine walks and three strikeouts.

MCCARDLE POWERS HITMEN

Peter McCardle had a run scored and an RBI to power the Hitmen 0over the 
Twins 7-0 in the day's second game. Also leading at the plate was Kevin 
Warren (1-1, two walks, run scored, home run) and Tommy Gallant (1-2, walk, 
RBI).

For the Twins, Daryl Yeo (1-3), Robert Perry (1-2) and Curtis Enman (1-2) 
were the contributors.

Winning pitcher Craig Manuel went five innings, allowing three hits and 
fanning nine batters. Losing pitcher Neil Arnold went four and two-thirds, 
allowing seven runs (six earned), striking out one, walking five and 
scattering five hits. Ian Power went one-third in relief.
