Ottawa, ON

The University of Ottawa Gee Gee's had an up and down weekend in Kingston
in week two of the OIWFA league play. Most of the players were up hours
before the sun as they made the long drive to Kingston to play McMaster
University first thing Saturday morning. It was a difficult start for the
team who appeared to be still shaking cobwebs and muscle cramps from the
car ride out as the Maruders jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Ottawa
never did come back from that deficit, falling 8-2. Ashley Sands, pitching
in front of a personal cheering section of friends and relatives, came in
to the game in relief of starter Erica Chan in the third inning and was
very sharp in allowing only 3 runs to the strong McMaster bats. The Gee
Gee's threatened in the first, pushing one run across on a Danna Masters
single and a sacrifice fly from Pam Hrick. Pam stayed hot for the whole
game as she ripped a home run to lead off the third inning, but that would
be all the offense the Gee Gees would muster.

The caffeine kicked in and the sun came out for the second game of the day
as Ottawa solved all of their offensive struggles from the first game. They
raced to a 2-0 lead in the first on back to back walks from Danna Masters
and Sarah Thompson before a double from Pam Hrick scored them all. The
offence kept rolling as the team exploded for 8 runs in the second inning.
All players contributed to the scoring, but a bases loaded triple from
Nicky Dunlop did the most damage. Allison Hibbett continued to be a clutch
hitter as she drove in two runs with a pair of singles, and Erin Durant is
quicky revealing herself as the latest Gee Gee speedster with a pair of
bunt singles and two runs scored. Lindsey McLaughlin had a great day at the
plate with a pair of singles and a triple that cashed 3 runs. Sarah
Thompson continued to keep defences on their toes with two bunts and a
couple of runs scored at the top of the order. Jessica Prot had a very
solid day with a pair of RBI singles. Defensively the Gee Gee's were
perfect behind Lindsey Hutton who scattered only two hits in a 5 shutout.

The third game of the day would prove to be a classic, it was a 4 point
match up for the Gee Gees as they faced divisional rivals Queens. The Gee
Gees opened the scoring in the first with the same old story as a solid
single from Pam Hrick drove in Danna Masters who seemed to be on base all
weekend. Pam picked up another RBI in the third when she drove in Erin
Durant with a single up the middle, but that would be all the offence the
Gee Gees could muster against a very solid Queens team. Ashley Sands
pitched a very good game, in her hometown, against her hometown team giving
up only two runs in 5 innings. Lindsey Hutton came in, for relief in the
7th and was touched for a triple by Jen Otley to push across the tying run.
In the tie-breaker, 2 uncharacteristic errors by the Gee Gee's allowed
Queens to score their run, but the team looked in good shape with their
3-4-5 batters due up in the home half of the inning. Their luck caught up
to them as all three batters hit solid line drives to the outfield that
were caught. Final score 4-3.

The drive to Kingston felt a lot longer Sunday morning for a tired group as
they prepared to play Brock University. It was a very good game on both
sides as Erica Chan took the ball for the Gee Gees. Three singles from
Brock in the first inning put them up 1-0 until the 4th. The Gee Gee bats
heated up in the 4th inning as they pushed across 6 runs. The most damage
came from Shannon Lundrigan who ripped a triple to cash two runs. Jen
Blakely added to the effort with an infield single, that scored a run. Jen
Leoppard who had another great weekend defensively drove in a run with an
RBI single and a great effort to stretch the play to second after an
overthrow. Team hustle and good baserunning continue to be the trademarks
of this team. Kerry Ground again showed she is one of the best clutch
hitters in the league with a double to drive in yet another run. Erica was
back to her old self and very sharp on the day. Another error in the 5th
inning and a few hits allowed Brock to score two runs and Lindsey Hutton
came in for the last 6 outs. She was again dominant as she allowed only one
walk in 6 batters to close out the 6-2 for the Gee Gees.

Another solid weekend for the team that will take their 6-2 record to
London next week to take on Western, Waterloo, and Windsor and also their
rematches against Queens and Carleton. Fans interested in following the
