Mix of old and new in Black Sox squad
Thursday October 28th 2004
The first New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox squad for new coach Eddie
Kohlhase is a case of a few new faces but also a steady core of players
from the victorious world championship team.
Kohlhase has selected a train on squad of 24 players looking forward to the
Evodrive Pacific Cup Series in Rotorua early next year. Included in the
squad are 14 players from the world championship winning team in
Christchurch earlier this year.
Of the newcomers to the squad Kohlhase would class the selection of
34-year-old Auckland catcher Lyndon Andrew as the real bolter.
"Lyndon is a 34-year-old rookie who has never played for New Zealand but he
is a guy that has been around for a long time in the Auckland team and he
has played a lot overseas. We see the advantage of Lyndon is the experience
he brings and that is of real value, he is a wise old head and that is what
is required in the catcher's position," said Kohlhase.
Joining Andrew as being new to the Black Sox set up are pitcher Tane
Richardson from Hutt Valley, Wellington infielders Craig Wallace and Chris
Eden-Huria and a trio of youngsters Penese Iosefo, David Butler and
Jonathan Munden.
The young trio have been selected as utilities and Kohlhase says their
selection was made with an eye to the future.
"They are all key members of the New Zealand under 19 boy's team and we
believe they are real long term prospects so we wanted to give them a taste
of the Black Sox environment," said Kohlhase.
Also included in the side are international players who missed selection in
the world championship winning team. Into the squad come pitcher Derrek
Coleman, and outfielders Rhys Casley, Daniel Milne and Fabian Makea who
joins his brother Thomas in the team.
The 24 man squad will come together for a training camp on November 13th
and 14th. Kohlhase says the training camp will be a chance to test all the
players' fitness while also plan for a successful assault on the Evodrive
Pacific Cup series in February next year.
