Day 5 Highlights
Ontario vs Nova Scotia Pitcher's Duel
In the bottom of the 1st Trent MacKeil (Enfield,
SK) made a great catch at the warning track with
an Ontario runner on base to end the inning and
keep the game scoreless
Ontario got on the
scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Andy
Skelton (Scarborough, ON) hit a 2 RBI double,
followed by an Andrew Narancsik (Otterville, ON)
RBI single to give Ontario a 3-0 lead
With 2 men
on in the top of the 7th, Jonathan Gunn (Denver
Guys Cove, NS) struck out with 2 men on to end the game.
Newfoundland vs Saskatchewan Bottom of the 7th Excitement
Colby Beierle (Maymont, SK) opened the scoring in
the top of the 1st with an RBI double giving
Saskatchewan the early lead
In the bottom of the
1st, with Newfoundland leading 2-1, Mark Lewis
hit an RBI triple, after 1 inning Newfoundland
led 4-1
In the top of the 5th, with Newfoundland
leading 6-2, Colby Beierle hit a 2 run home run
In the top of the 6th Brad Walchuk (Melville, SK)
hit a solo shot and made the game 6-5
In the top
of the 7th, with 2 out and Saskatchewan on their
last life, Walchuk hit a long fly ball that was
dropped in the outfield. Saskatchewan scored 2
runs on the play and took the lead, Saskatchewan
would add 1 more run to take an 8-6 lead into the
bottom of the 7th
In the bottom of the 7th Brad
Ezekiel (Harbour Main, NL) hit a single followed
by a Jonathan Kane (Conception Bay South, NL)
monster 2 run home run; tying the game
Shane
O'Brien (Holyrood, NL) followed at bat with a
walk off home run winning the game for
Newfoundland. Jonathan Kane went 4-4, scored 2
runs, knocked in 5RBI and was the winning
pitcher. Kane was a member of Canada's Bronze
Medal team at the 2005 World Jr Championship.
Alberta vs Ontario
Ontario (6-3) secured 3rd place and a playoff
berth by crushing Alberta 9-0 in a game that
lasted only 5 innings due to the 7 run mercy
rule
The loss eliminated Alberta (4-5) from
playoff contention
Luke Raymer got the shutout victory allowing only 4 hits.
Nova Scotia vs British Columbia
British Columbia secured a playoff spot by
defeating Nova Scotia 7-0. British Columbia will
finish first or second depending on how
Newfoundland does against PEI in the last game of
the round robin tomorrow morning. A Newfoundland
win against PEI would place British Columbia in
second and Newfoundland would finish
first. Tyson Barkman (Abbotsford, BC) earned the
no-hitter shutout victory. Bryan Abrey led the
way going 2-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.
