Centennials take first two games at Canadians

Instead of a perfect diamond, Trevor Wardell gave his wife Lisa
something more rare for her birthday.
The St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials pitcher worked a perfect game in
an 11-0 mercy in five innings over the Quebec Eastmain Fireballs at
the 2005 Canadian Senior men's fastball championships Sunday at the
Douglas Tarry Complex Sunday night.
"A little present for her," said Wardell. "I couldn't take her
anywhere so I took her to the ball park."
Lisa watched her husband strike out eight of 15 batters.
"It was a good game. I just hit my spots," Wardell said. "I felt good
going in and after the first inning I felt pretty loose. Three
strikeouts in the first was a good start and I continued from there."
The Eastmain Fireballs, from near James Bay, were overmatched facing
a team with seven players with Canadian National team experience.
"They're a young team, a new team," Wardell said. "They don't play
the competition we have here in Ontario. It's good for them to come
here and get the experience."
Rob O'Brien led the Centennials' 14-hit attack with a single, double
and triple, drew one walk and scored three times.
"It was a fun game," O'Brien said. "We had an objective to do and we
went out and hit the ball early and got a three run lead. We hit the
pitches right through. A lot of guys had hits and I was fortunate to
have three."
Jeff Seed, Ryan Wolfe and Tyler Lessard each had two hits and two
RBIs. Mike Taylor, Rob O'Brien, Craig Crawford and Kevin Lynch also
drove in runs.
Chris Payne chipped in with a pair of hits and Crawford scored twice.
Quebec's Ray Shanoush took the loss, allowing 11 runs, seven earned,
on 13 hits and one walk over four innings.
St. Thomas improved to 2-0 with a pair of shutout wins.
"We're getting everybody together and the boys are starting to gel
and hopefully by the end of the week we'll be all together," Wardell said.
Rob O'Brien gets the call to pitch for the Centennials in their 2
p.m. game today against the Mulgrave Eagles from Nova Scotia.
"We haven't given up a hit yet, so a lot of pressure on me (today),"
O'Brien said. "Things are working well but it's still early in the week."
Nova Scotia also owns a 2-0 record after beating the P.E.I. Kinkora
Hitmen 9-2 and Vancouver Grey Sox 3-1.
