National softball league on the move
Wednesday August 31st 2005

The New Zealand Softball National League is moving to a new spot in
the sporting calendar for the 2005/06 season with the competition
confirmed for a November start.

For the upcoming season the National League will start on November
19th with three weekends of round robin play ahead of the finals
series to be held in Wellington on December 17th and 18th. The
league will have a one week break in the first week of December to
allow time for other scheduled softball tournaments and events.

The National League in its current form began in March of 2003 and
has been held three times over the past three seasons with the event
changing timeslots each season. Last season the National League ran
from March through to the first week of April.

New Zealand Softball chief executive Dale Eagar says the decisions to
change the time slot for the league came after a review process and
consultation. One reason put forward for the change included the
congestion of the sporting calendar in March.

"We are looking for a window of opportunity in the sporting calendar
where we are not competing with other major events and can look to
achieve some greater exposure," said Eagar.

Another reason put forward for the change of dates was the busy
softball calendar and the fact the pinnacle of the season for many
players is the national club championships held at the end of the
season in March and the desire not to clash and interfere with that.

The National League is a franchise based competition for the elite
men's and women's players in the country with a player draft in use
to ensure the country's best players get the opportunity to show case
themselves. In the National League last season there were seven teams
in the men's competition which Wellington won while Hutt Valley took
out the women's title against five other teams.
