Micksburg wins "Battle of Eastern Ontario"

Micksburg, ON
Game 2 of the Greater Ottawa Fastball League vs.
Upper Ottawa Valley Men's Fastball League
regional finals was played Friday night Oct 7 in very cool conditions.

After losing game 1 at home by a score of 4-0,
Kanata Team Easton defeated Micksburg in their
own park by the same 4-0 score to tie the series.
Dan Konkle pitched the complete game shutout.
John Peck had a homer for Team Easton. Corey Costello took the loss.

The teams had agreed previously that in order to
save travel and get the series in before the
weather got too cool that the third and deciding
game would be a “mini-game” in which the first
team to hold a lead after a complete inning would the winners.

Game 3 “mini-game” turned out to be the longest
game of the series, as the teams played seven
scoreless innings, before Corey Costello hit a
walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth to win
the inaugural Regional Series for the Micksburg
Twins. Costello had the pitching victory. Dan Konkle was the loser.

Both Costello and Konkle threw all 15 innings on
Friday. Dan Konkle allowed only one run and
struck out 29. Corey Costello finished an
incredible season on the slab (which included two
perfect games) and at the plate by throwing eight
innings of shutout ball and hitting the game winning homer in the final match.

Some details of the final games are on the league
website at

(game 1) and

(games 2 and 3).

This was the first year that the two league
champions played off in a Regional Final, as well
as interlocking in regular season play, and I am
confident that we can call the experiment a
success and it should be in place again for the 2006 season.

league with several articles and photos.)

MICKSBURG – Corey Costello settled the men’s
regional fastball final with one swing of the bat
on a long and cold Friday night in Micksburg.

In the bottom of the eighth extra inning,
Costello ripped a solo home run over the fence in
centre field to give the Twins a 1-0 win in what
was essentially game three of the series.

After Kanata won game two, the teams played
sudden-death extra innings to determine the series winner.

In a serious pitching duel, Costello battled with
Kanata’s Dan Konkle, both fanning batters in order.

Through 15 innings Konkle struck out 29, gave up seven hits and only one run.

Costello fanned 17 batters, surrendered three hits and four runs.

The Twins had the best chance to end the extra
innings in the bottom of the 11th after Costello
slapped a leadoff triple. Kanata put both Jamey
Mick and Brad Steege on base with intentional
walks to load the bases. But the gamble paid off
as Konkle battled back to strike out Kerr
Childerhose, Brent McIntyre and Dwight Mick to escape the inning.

The Greater Ottawa Fastball League champion
Kanata Team Easton won game two of the regional final 4-0.

After four scoreless innings, Team Easton got out
to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a RBI
single by Randy Peck and a two- run homer by John Peck.

In the sixth Kevin Chevrier doubled and scored on
a Randy Peck RBI groundout to put Kanata up 4-0
