Dropped Third Strike

I believe the reason is that a put out has to occur in order for an out to 
be registered. Just because the ball beats the runner to first base does 
not constitute an out.  The first baseman must catch the ball as 
well.  Like wise even though a third strike has occurred, a catch must be 
in order for a put out to occur( this is why in most cases an error is 
charged to the catcher if a dropped third strike allows a batter to reach 
first safely).
