Dropped Third Strike

I believe the reason is that a put out has to occur in order for an out to
be registered. Just because the ball beats the runner to first base does
not constitute an out. The first baseman must catch the ball as
well. Like wise even though a third strike has occurred, a catch must be
in order for a put out to occur( this is why in most cases an error is
charged to the catcher if a dropped third strike allows a batter to reach
first safely).
