Dropped Third Strike - An Explanation

I asked a former Major League pitcher about the origin of the Dropped Third
Strike rule while I was at the Diamond Backs Spring Training Camp for a Wood
Bat Baseball Tournament this past weekend.

He pointed out that the Original Knickerbocker RULES of BASEBALL - 1845 -
list Rule 5 as follows:

"Three balls being struck at and missed, and the last one caught, is a hand
out; if not caught, is considered fair, and the striker bound to run".
