I guess the only thing I want to set straight is the motion to go to the ASA
Bat Standard 2004. At the 2005 Softball Canada Sr. men's Championships the
Miken!! was used because the ISF allows it. The bat brought back HRs in
abundance. Players and coaches said it should not be used. The move to the
ASA standard is because they have a testing standards while ISF does not.
They rely on the manufacturer. The ISC and the ASA use the same Bat Standard
so it puts us in line with both organizations. I would think that is a good
thing considering a lot of our teams play ISC.
As for news about the Men's game it is pretty hard to have good news when
the sport was taken out of the pan American games. Next year would have been
the Qualifier but that is not going ahead at this point. The National team
program is in holding pattern. There is to be a Commonwealth Games in
Australia but that trip could cost $100,000 and with Government cut backs I
do not see that happening. SC like other Canadian Sports organizations
relies on government funding as teams contribute nothing to the organization
other than the Province affiliation fees. In BC that is approximately $
10,000 which works out to maybe $5.00 per team, likely less. The women's
team gets more funding because of its Olympic status. I do not question
raising fees for the Men's and cannot confirm that motion passed. The fees
have been charged and there always are bidders. This past year the St.
Thomas organization that did a great job made over $100,000 in profit. They
did a great job and reaped the benefit. As for the women's suggestion to
lower the amount you need only look at the fact SC has no host for next
years event. Do something like lower the hosting fee or do not hold the
event. One can be facetious and criticize but if Tom thinks the members of
SC are sitting around doing nothing he is sadly mistaking. Every
organization is having difficulties. ISC II is growing but only at the
expense of other organizations. I am not sure they are building new teams.
The pie is shrinking and just being divided up in a different way. My turn
to rant Brian Van Os
