Harbour hit some form
Saturday November 26th 2005
Power hitting has taken North Harbour to two victories today in the New
Zealand Community Trust mens National League at Colquhoun Park, Palmerston
North.
In a display that shows just how dangerous the North Harbour side can be
they opened up today with the thumping 14-1 victory over Central Vikings
and then backed it up with a comprehensive 7-0 win over Hutt Valley.
In the opening game of the day against Central Vikings North Harbour showed
their intentions in the first inning scoring two runs when Jarrad Martin
came home on an automatic by Brad Rona.
Runs kept flowing for Harbour as they scored two more in the third, another
two in the fourth and eight more in the fifth to round out the game.
Joining Rona in the home run hitting stakes were Orlando Rodriguez, Jarrad
Martin and Ricky Manson.
Central Vikings only run in the game came in the fourth inning when Bevan
Martin scored on a hit by Joseph OLeary.
On the mound Jarrad Martin shared the pitching duties for North Harbour
with Jim Grego. Martin started the game and he faced 15 batters giving up
two hits while taking three strikeouts. Grego came into the game as relief
pitcher in the fifth inning and he faced six batters picking up two
strikeouts while giving up one hit.
For Central Vikings Penese Iosefo had the unfortunates task of trying to
contain the Harbour hitters, he faced 30 batters taking three strikeouts
while giving up 12 hits and four walks.
The winning run continued for North Harbour later in the day as they were
again dominant this time against Hutt Valley taking the win 7-0.
Just like in the first game for North Harbour Brand Rona led the way with
the bat picking up two automatics in the game to go with the one he scored
against Central Vikings.
In other mens national league fixtures the defending champions have
continued their unbeaten record with another two wins today at Rosedale
Park, North Harbour.
The team from the capital were too strong for Auckland 3-1 and then they
overcame Southern Pride 4-0.
The second game against Southern Pride was a lot tighter that the score
line would suggest with only a couple of big hits from the Wellington power
hitters breaking the game open.
The game was all locked up at 0-0 until the fifth inning when Wellington
outfielder Damian McCulloch stepped up and smashed the ball over the left
field fence for the first hit of the game.
The effort was repeated in the sixth inning when Gene Lutton did the same
thing and then the icing on the cake came in the seventh inning when Todd
Grego picked up an automatic of his own with a runner on base to push the
score line out to 4-0.
Much of the game was a pitching duel between New Zealand Community Trust
Black Sox hurlers Marty Grant for Wellington and Michael Gaiger for
Southern Pride. Grant faced 22 batters taking a phenomenal 18 strikeouts
while giving up one walk and no hits. For Southern Pride Gaiger faced 26
batters taking 15 strikeouts while giving up six hits.
