Canada Defeats Cuba 9-0
November 26th, 2005

(Ottawa) Softball Canada’s Women’s National team defeated Cuba 9-0 in their 
first game
at the VI Pan American Softball Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Auburn Sigurdson (Surrey, BC) earned the win for Canada; she gave up only 
two hits and
struck out nine Cuban batters.
Canada was led by Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) who hit two singles, scored 
two runs and
recorded two RBIs.  Janiva Willis (Irishtown, BC) contributed a double, a 
stolen base
and scored two runs.  Canada got other hits from Kristy Odamura (Richmond, 
BC), Alison
Bradley (Pinkerton, ON), Cindy Eadie (Brantford, ON), and Brittany Freight 
(Las Vegas,
NV).

With the score 1-0 after one inning, Canada exploded offensively in the 
second inning.
Timpf hit a change up to center field, followed by a Willis double down the 
right field
line.  Timpf would score on a wild pitch, with Willis advancing to second 
on the play.
Eadie then reached on an error by the Cuban first baseman.  Freight stepped 
into the
batters box and was hit by a pitch.  When the dust settled, Canada scored 
six runs on
three hits and five Cuban errors.  After 2 innings of play, Canada led 7-0.
Head Coach Lori Sippel on Canada’s first game and first win “"I am very 
pleased with the
team's performance tonight. There were many solid performances that 
contributed to the 9-
0 victory. However, I am most pleased with the readiness of the team prior 
to game time
and the constant pressure they put on Cuba each inning."

Canada’s next action at the Pan American Championships is on Sunday with a 
double
header.  In the first game they face Brazil, followed by a match up with 
Colombia.  The
first game kicks off at 8:30PM EST.
