Canada Loses to USA 9-2; Still alive at VI Pan Am Softball Championship
December 2nd, 2005
(Ottawa) Softball Canada’s Women’s National Team lost 9-2 to the United 
States on Friday
night at the VI Pan American Games Softball Championship.  Canada played 
the US tough
for five innings before letting the game slip away.

Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) got the start in the circle for Canada, she 
held the United
States to three hits and three walks through three innings of play.

The United States took an early lead scoring two runs in the first 
inning.  Canada would
respond in the fourth; Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) walked, followed by 
Erin Cumpstone
(Saskatoon, SK) reaching on an error by the American short stop.  Erin Gee 
(Vancouver,
BC) entered the game to pinch run for Cumpstone.  Megan Timpf (Port Dover, 
ON) then
reached base on an error, Bradley scored on the play as American catcher 
Stacey Nuveman
misplayed the throw at home.

Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) entered the game in the fourth inning when 
Mackin got herself
in a jam by walking two batters.  Lanz retired the side and got Canada out 
of trouble.

The US got their bats going in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on six 
hits and one
Canadian error.  After five innings the score was USA 7 Canada 1.  Canada 
would add one
more run in the sixth inning but could not make a comeback.  American third 
baseman
Crystal Bustos hit a monster home run in the sixth inning, effectively 
punctuating the
win.

Due to the loss, Canada must play back to back on Saturday night if they 
want to make it
to the final game.  At 6PM CST Canada will play Venezuela who edged Cuba 
1-0, the winner
of the Canada vs. Venezuela game will face the United States in the 
championship game.
