Hutt women hit there way into NZCT National League final
Saturday December 17th 2005

Consistent hitting today has booked the defending champions Hutt Valley a
place in the New Zealand Community Trust women’s National League final.

Hutt Valley won direct entry into tomorrow’s final with a 6-3 defeat in the
playoff game against the previously unbeaten Auckland side.

Hutt Valley set up the win in the bottom of the fourth inning when lead
off hitter Api Stone-O’Kane singled to left field and scored on a triple by
Okawa Preist. Following that Preist then scored on a pass ball to give the
defending champions a two run advantage.

Behind on the scoreboard and under pressure in the field Auckland began to
make mistakes and Hutt Valley made them pay. In the bottom of the fifth
inning the defending champions scored another two runs when Upu Lote and
Shirley Povey scored via a combination of hits and fielding errors.

Hutt Valley stretched their lead further with another two runs in the sixth
inning when Nadia Mauriohooho scampered home on a triple by Upu Lote who
then came home on a hit by Kylee Young.

Down by six runs Auckland refused to give up though picking up three runs
in their final at bat when Casey Roper and Atsuku Tanaka both scored on a
hit by Fiona Timu. Followed by Tania Misa who came home on a fielder’s
choice. However it was a case of too little too late and Hutt Valley ran
out the winners 6-3.

On the mound for Hutt Valley Jana Vacikova faced 34 batters giving up 10
hits and four walks while taking six strikeouts.

For Auckland Carina Hale started the game on the mound and she faced 21
batters giving up nine hits while taking one strikeout. Hale was replaced
in the fifth inning by Helen Packer who faced 14 batters giving up seven
hits and one walk.

In other results from finals day today the home team Wellington have been
eliminated from the title race on the back of two defeats. The team from
the capital lost their opening game today against the defending champions
Hutt Valley 4-2 and followed that up with a 1-0 loss against Central
Vikings in the elimination playoff game.

While Wellington may be out Central Vikings have kept their finals chances
alive with their win over Wellington and they will go on to play Auckland
tomorrow at 10am with the winner of that game earning the right to take on
Hutt Valley in the final at 12pm.

NEW ZEALAND COMMUNITY TRUST WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE FINALS SERIES RESULTS:
