Hutt Valley victorious at men’s NPC
Tuesday January 10th 2006

Hutt Valley has been crowned the New Zealand Community Trust Men’s National
Provincial Cup champions today with a 6-0 victory in the final over
Wellington.

In the final at Colquhoun Park, Palmerston North, Hutt Valley were always
in command as they were the first to score and defensively pitcher Jeremy
Manly was in control.

In an outstanding performance Manly pitched a shutout against Wellington
not giving up a hit in the game. Wellington’s only runners in the game came
from walks.

Hutt Valley hit the front in the final in their first at bat as they scored
three runs with David Butler, Kango Teriu and Jeremy Manly all crossing
home plate. The team from the Valley went further ahead in the second
inning courtesy of a home run off the bat of Justin Karaitiana.

With Hutt Valley holding a four run advantage Wellington had no answers as
they couldn’t get hold of the pitching of Manly. The new NZCT Black Sox
pitcher Manly faced 25 batters giving up just one walk and no hits while
taking 12 strikeouts.

Hutt Valley closed the game out in the fifth inning scoring another two
runs when Corie Karaitiana and Justin Karaitiana both came home on a hit by
David Butler.

While Manly was in control on the mound for Hutt Valley the same couldn’t
be side for the Wellington pitchers.

Craig Gibson started the game on the mound for Wellington he faced 19
batters giving up seven hits, four runs and three walks while taking one
strikeout. Shane Doherty replaced Gibson in the fourth inning and he faced
12 batters giving up four hits, two runs and one walk while taking one
strikeout.

Hutt Valley’s victory today is the second time they have claimed the
Provincial Cup title having finished on top in the inaugural season of the
tournament in 2002/03.
