Subject: Brother Patrick men's tournament - Results day 2

Marist’s Brother Patrick-Pacific Blue series. Simson Reserve, Penrose. Sunday.
In a tournament studded with tiebreakers, Marist organisers desperately tried to keep the games to schedule but Saturday night’s late games had to be played this morning and tomorrow’s will start at 8am.
As well as tiebreakers there have been home runs. In the last game of the day, Japan v Ramblers went to a fourth tiebreaker before a giant home run, with bases loaded, gave the visitors a 7-4 win. 59 home runs have been hit so far, in 27 matches.
Japan might have started the first day out of form with a loss to Marist but the side showed great determination to finish top of the group with a win over Northcote. The side is getting better every outing.
Metro is also on a hot streak, still unbeaten after a demolition job on Japan Under-23. The odds are on Metro v Japan again in the final, after the early Monday showdown between the sides.

 A. Japan 5 Northcote 3.
Lead-off batter Dean Wallace started his side off with a home run, national captain Jarrad Martin and Brad Rona singled and Casey Eden brought them home for a 3-0 lead and Northcote looked commanding.
An injury to a Japanese batter, hit by a pitched ball, caused concern and brought the home team’s attitude into question, but Japan shrugged it off with a masterly batting display. Hiraku Yokoyama, who had singled in the first, did it again in the third and Kouchiro Mizguchi hit over the fence to narrow the gap.
Brad Rona replaced pitcher Todd Grego in the fourth and suffered as Yasutoshi Yamasaki hit a home run before two more scored through solid batting from Kazuya Nakamura, Yu Nichimori and Synuei Suzuki.
Harriet Tomlin scored while Jeff Weber and Andrew Laird umpired.

 A. Waitakere Bears 6 Auckland Marist 4.
It has been a fine series for Black Sox man Jonathan Munden who started with a single, hit first of two, and scored on a home run to Takaki Sato but Bears struck back in the third after Gordon Hooper started with a hit.
He went out at second but Travis Miller was on base, followed by Paddy Shannon and Rueben Topia who forced an error for a run, before Gerald Long hit to score two.
Paddy’s brother Heinie kept up his steady batting form with a double in the fourth with back-up shots from Peter Van Campen, followed by a Peter Aro hit to score two for a 4-3 Marist lead.
Paddy Shannon was hit by a pitch, Kyle Kouka bunted and Long hit a long one over right field for the winning margin. Paddy Shannon, emulating his brother in some respects, faced 24 batters for the win, with nine Marist hits.
Harriet Tomlin, Richard Gale and Jeff Weber were the officials.

 A. Northcote 7 beat Hutt Marist 1.

 A. HV Marist 5 Auckland Marist 3.
Hutt Marist was desperate to keep in the top section so started in style with Tyson Byrne tripling in the first, Michael Foote slipping single through before Feagaigai Feagaigai hot out of the park. Aaron Byrne also hit in the three-run start.
Marist, with the batting of Carlaus Te Kawa, Sato, Gus Leger and the reliable Shannon, who it another triple, clawed back three runs but Marist could not collect even one more hit in the next four turns while Hutt had one from Jiri Vrezacheck. Then Blair Easthope doubled for Hutt and Scott Easthope scored him from second base.
Les Haslam and Jeff Weber umpired with Adrienne Weller scoring.

 B. Japan Under-23 5 Rotorua Marist 2.
Yusuke Sasaki hit a home run in the first with Takashi Ngaoka on base, then Norohito Aoyama tripled in the second, followed by Kei Kusumoto’s single for 3-0.
Takuto Tutui tripled in the third and a walk by Sasaki set up the final runs from Kusumoto’s second single.
Blake Purcell, Marvin Gardiner and Santiago Lataire combined for Marist’s two in the second.
Lynette Leathart, Richard Gale and Les Haslam officiated.

 B. Japan U-23 11 United 3.
Japan left no runners on base after their 12 hits, with Takasi Ngaoka taking three hits, including a home run. Masanori Ueno hit twice and was hit by a pitch and Kayunori Hirami also hit two, with one over the fence. United’s Brock Williams had two hits and combined with Tony Niu and Adrian Peihopa to score two runs with Simon Edwards hitting a double and scoring on Williams’ second hit.

 B. United 7 Ramblers 6 (tiebreaker).
Not only did Ramblers drop to third in the section, just making the top Brother Patrick section, but they dropped the mantle of national club champion in the process, allowing a side of inferior quality to climb back into the game.
Jamie Robinson walked in the first, as did Scott O’Neale, the man who had a 100% lead-off record in the Vic Guth series last week. Both scored on a Lyndon Andrew hit and an error for a handy 2-0 lead.
In the third it ballooned to 5-0 on errors, hit pitches and one hit, from Mike Cameron.
It became the defining game of the season for Ramblers when United batted its third. Tony Niu, improving week by week, and Carl Hiko singled and both scored on a triple from Brock Williams, from Bobbie King’s pitching.
O’Neale made the game safer for Ramblers with a fifth inning solo home run for a 6-3 lead, which United cancelled out easily. Simon Edwards started with a drive to centre field, Isaac Fletcher walked but was taken out in the attempt to steal second.
Hiko tripled to score two and Williams hit again to tie the match up and force a time limit tiebreaker and Ramblers could not produce a run. Michael Wilson could for United, slapping a triple into right field. United outhit Ramblers 8-4.
Andrew Lawson, Tony Cathro did the umpiring and Lynnette Leathart scored.

 B. Metro 5 Ramblers 4.
Metro is aiming for the national title this season after decades of mid-table stuff and it showed against the reigning champion.
Ramblers started in style, snapping at Metro for four runs. Nathan Nukunuku walked, Donny Hale singled, Travis Wilson forced an error to load the bases for Scott O’Neale who hit a grand slam, four-run effort. Ramblers did have another sortie in the third after Hale and Wilson hit but Hale was tagged at home and Wilson was stranded
Metro’s new style of attacking play, with greater urgency, allowed Bevan Martin a single in the first but there was luck in the second when Duane Jerard was hit with a pitch before Bernard Hale doubled for one run.
In the fourth, with one out, Kurt Allan hit over, followed by Bernard Hale’s homer and a Fenton hit which continued the run slide. Des Pemerika then hit another home run for the winning margin.

 Bro Patrick: Japan U-23 8 Northcote 3.
Japan scored one in the first before Northcote scrambled runs from Dean Wallace in the third and fifth, aided by three hits from three turns from Brad Rona. Then Japan had a massive inning, scoring seven, with only a home run by Derrek Coleman as a Northcote answer. The win took the Japan side into second place in the section behind Metro and ahead of Ramblers.
The winner went forward to play Metro.
Richard Gale, Les Haslam and Lynnette Leathart did the officiating.

 BP. Metro 9 Japan U-23 2.
Dion Nukunuku was caught on the fence in the first turn and the side had a fine double play in Japan’s first when Kurt Allan caught in centre field and rifled the ball to third to catch out the speedy Masamori Uemo going on the catch.
The power batters started pumping in the second when, with one out, Bevan Martin made himself welcome as a guest player with a first pitch home run over centre field. That spurred the slimming Duane Jerard who also hit the first pitch over the same spot, prompting a prompt pitcher change, which is one of the features of the pitcher-rich visiting sides.
Kayunori Hirana hit hard over left field in the third to cut the lead and Takuto Tutui did the same over centre in the fourth but the Metro bats flashed again in the bottom of the inning. Martin, once again with one out, hit over left field, Jerard was walked, Hale singled and Michael Niu joined the fun with a home run over centre for 6-2.
There was worse to come for the visitors with a walk to the speedy Roman Gabriel who scored on a single by Nukunuku before Taifau Matai, the man with three gold and one silver world championship medals who hit his old Black Sox mate home for three more runs and the final tally.
Terence Hibbert threw a two-hitter, giving Metro the chance to play Japan A in the game where the winner went straight to the final. But it was a Monday game, now not so early as some sides have to play at 8am.

BP. Ramblers 8 HV Marist 0.
This was the feature match for those who were there to watch Travis Wilson. It was classic hitting with the big man hitting over the fence in the first and third and taking a triple in the fourth. In the meantime Aaron Thompson also it a home run, Donny Hale a double and the rest were on base on walks when they were slammed home.
The winner went on to meet top seeded Japan.
John Hireme and Bobbie King shared the pitching, with Hireme doing the bulk, as he did in the next match against Japan.

 BP. Japan 7 Ramblers 4.
This battle was out of sight on diamond 2, the graveyard on the day when the wind whistled down the ground.
Syuhei Suzuki and Yu Nishimori, with help from Takayuki Sakai, scored one in the first and Lyndon Andrew and Lawrence Naera equalled at 1-1 with the game going into tiebreaker. The first tb was scoreless, then Nathan Nukunuku rifled a shot which hit first base and cannoned off the field and Ramblers took the lead but the game went back and forth to the fourth tiebreaker when Yukinori Nakashima hit a grand slam to win the match, when his side was trailing.
It was a rude shock for the national champion side which was then due to play HV Marist again, but it was too late to start the scheduled games after day-long delays.
Richard Gale and Andrew Lawson umpired. Harriet Tomlin scored.

 Plate: Bears 3 United 2.
Simon Edwards, the “father” of the United youngsters, hit a home run in the second with Brock Williams on base to take a lead but Bears, with Gordon Hooper hitting over the fence in the first and a combination of Victory Niu, Adam Morunga and Travis Miller grabbed two runs in the fourth for the win.
Rowena MacKenzie scored and the umpiring was done by Andrew Laird and Jeff Weber.

Plate: Auckland Marist 10 Rotorua Marist 3.
Early home runs by Jonathan Munden and Heinie Shannon, with hitter Gus Leger on base, helped Auckland to a good start before Dylan Tomlin grabbed an unearned run in the second. Takaki Sato hit a homer in the third.
In the fourth, Tomlin walked again, Munden forced himself on base, Leger doubled and Damien Nairn, who has played for Australia’s under-19 side, hit a grand slam.
Gutsy Rotorua, who took five hits compared with Marist’s seven, went down to Jamie Love’s pitching but only after a fight. In the third Martin Gardiner hit on to base and the Argentine pairing of Santiago Lataine and Sebastian Gerrasutti hit well to score.
Laurelle Rogers scored. Andrew Lawson and Tony Cathro umpired.
