Subject: Auckland - North Harbour men - Sat comp

Saturday play: Men - by Trevor Rowse

Northcote 4 Marist 0.
Brad Rona home run was the biggest of Northcote’s eight hits
while Marist, with five, did not convert them to even one run.
The Northcote win put the side back on track with Dean Wallace
again showing his long-term class with a triple to start the
second, hit home by Michael Boaler, who then scored on Todd Wilson’s
double. Wilson is a great addition from Hutt Valley.
Boaler scored again in the fourth when he, Derrek Coleman
and Wilson hit in succession. Coleman has been the man with the
bat in the last two weeks. In the fifth it was Rona’s home run.
Jamie Love, making a fine start to his softball career at
the top, had two hits and caused problems for Northcote both
times. Jonathan Munden, Takaki Sato and Gus Leger, Marist’s consistent
batters, did what they could with a hit each.

Marist 12 Papatoetoe 5.
There was a complete reversal of batting achievement in Marist’s
second game with Love getting three hits for four turns for a
fine day in the batting box.
But he was outdone by Jamie Matiu who collected four for four,
starting with a first inning home run with bases loaded. He scored
two more but did not hit anyone else home.
Love followed with a home run in the first for a 5-0 lead.
Sato hit over in the second for one more run and there were three
in the sixth when Matiu, Love and and Peter Aro scored.
Heinie Shannon, who pitched to the first seven batters, was
relieved by Love who allowed eight of the nine Papatoetoe hits.
But Shannon had a home run of his own in the seventh when Marist
scored three more. Matiu and Love also scored, aided by Munden.
So Papatoetoe had enough hits to win the game, and enough
runs.
Big Mike Bristowe had a fine batting day with three hits,
including a seventh inning home run as Papatoetoe made a futile
four run rally, batting through the order as if it were the winning
team.
Phillip Tau hit in the third to welcome Love to the pitching
plate and then stole third base. Bristowe scored in the fourth
on a fielder’s choice and a double by Rhys Mau. He hit again
in the fifth but went out at third base.
Tau started the seventh with a single, Robert Lunjevich walked
and Doyle Matautia hit to score one, with Lunjevich out at third.
Matautia and Brendon Walsh scored on Bristowe’s home run but
Papatoetoe was seven runs short.
Les Haslam umpired and Raewyn Humphreys did the scoring for
both Marist games.

Glenora 4 Otahuhu 3.
Pitcher Tom Huta did well to confuse Glenora’s batters for
most of the game while Troy Caddy, despite illness, did the same
for Glenora and the teams battled all game
Otahuhu had a 3-1 lead, after Glenora’s Marko Lezaic hit a
home run in the first, with two out, but Glenora clawed its way
back into the game in the third, with two coming home on a hit
by newcomer Mikaere Apanui, 15 years old and playing to fill
a gap.
He played a good game in right field and was the man on the
spot after playing in the under-19 side earlier.

Saturday’s games at Phyllis Street were controlled by Walter
Nukunuku on plate and Tony Niu on base, with the second game
being called solo by Andrew Laird. Tracey Atkins scored both
games.
