Junior Black Sox Development Squad named with 2008 in mind
Friday March 17th 2006

New Junior Black Sox coach Paul Stockford has named his first
training squad today with a tour to Australia in July in mind
and the long term goal of the 2008 World Championships.

The squad of 32 players will assemble for a training camp in
early April and following that Stockford will name his team to
travel to Australia in July to compete in the Friendship Series.

Stockford says the tour to Australia will be a great chance to
give the players selected a taste of international softball while
also giving them the experience of touring another country.

“It is really important to give the players a taste of international
softball because the atmosphere and pressure is a lot different
to what they are used to playing in New Zealand,” said Stockford.

In the Friendship Series the New Zealand team will be taking
on two Australian selection teams and following that an Australian
team will be selected from these two sides to play the New Zealanders
in another series. Also on tour Stockford is hoping to get the
chance to match his Kiwi team against older state teams as well.

While success in Australia is the immediate goal for the Junior
Black Sox Stockford is also looking ahead to 2008 and the World
Championships.

“The key is to develop a strong core of players and give as many
players an opportunity to shine as possible. One of the key objectives
for myself and the other coaching staff is to instill solid fundamental
skills and a good work ethic so the players can go away from
the camp and work on their game over the next 12 months and develop
as players.”
