DeMo EHS Fastpitch, Haarlem The Netherlands wins spring season
tournament in Antwerp, Belgium
Without 7 players due to several reasons DeMo EHS Fastpitch stayed
unbeaten in the pre season of the European Softball scene. Darren
Davies (NZ) and Martin Svoboda (CZ) will arrive beginning of
May, Dutch National Team pitcher Erwin Visser wasn't able to
play because of a bad case of flu, Glen Moreland (Richmond Hill,
ON) still injured and Pim Winkel, Griffith Cathalina and Alphons
Illis had work commitments, which meant both coaches Rob de Mooij
and Norman Ames had to put on their cleats to help out the team!
The organizers of this years tournament had been able to bring
together a very strong line up with the top four Dutch teams
(Dutch Champions Storks, 2005 runner up DeMo EHS, nr 3 Kokolishi
and nr 5 TIW Survivors) along with Belgium Champions Brasschaat
Braves and organizers Deurne Spartans.
On Saturday, DeMo EHS had to face the strongest batting line
up in Europe in Kokolishi. Kokolishi consisting only of players
from the Dutch Antilles was beaten by their own weapon, the long
ball. DeMo EHs started well with a 2 run homerun off the bat
by Michel Groenhart. After Kokolishi tied the score in the second,
coach Norman Ames gave DeMo EHS the lead again on a solo shot
to right center field followed by a 3 run homerun to center field
off the bat of coach Rob de Mooij! Kokolishi scored one extra
run in the bottom of the fifth on a huge homerun by center fielder
Enio Kwas but pitcher Eric Zomerdijk was able to shut down the
side which ended the game and resulted in a 6-3 win.
The second game of the day was heavily affected by rain and was
called after three innings resulting in a 1-0 win over organizers
Deurne Spartans. Winning pitcher was young Jeffry Visser.
The first semi final played on Sunday was between Kokolishi and
TIW Survivors which resulted in an easy win for the guys from
The Hague (Kokolishi). The second semi final was a rematch of
the 2005 "Holland Series" between Storks and DeMo EHS.
Pitcher Eric Zomerdijk was in control the entire game and the
DeMo EHS batting line up was on fire. Hits by Maurice Meijer,
Anthony Beaumont, Michel Groenhart and Dave Hazel resluted in
an easy win and a place in the final.
Missing three of their pitchers (Visser, Svoboda and Moreland)
DeMo EHS had to go again with rookie pitcher Jeffry Visser and
what a talent this guy has. Both teams batted well with another
homerun by Michel Groenhart which resulted in a 6-3 lead for
DeMo EHS in the bottom of the fourth. Kokolishi came back in
the fifth with hits of the bat of Gerald and Aldric Dunlop to
6-5 and a 2 run homerun meant the end of Jeffry Visser. Zomerdijk
shut down the side in the 5th and the sixth inning. In the top
op the 7th DeMo EHS was able to turn the game around on a couple
of walks and hits from Etienne and Maurice Meijer which gave
DeMo EHS a 9-7 lead. Zomerdijk then shut down the Kokolishi line
up with two grounders and a fly ball to centerfield.
This was the third year in a row that DeMo EHS was able to win
the Antwerp Spring Tournament and adding the 7 missing players
gives DeMo EHS a major confidence boost towards the start of
the Dutch National League next weekend. And if even the coaching
staff starts hitting homeruns.......
