Makea hits Black Sox to victory
Thursday May 5th 2006

With two home runs off the bat of Thomas Makea and a strong performancefrom
pitcher Jeremy Manley the New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox
havecome from behind to defeat Australia 9-5 on day two of the
PacificSeries.

The NZCT Black Sox had to claw their way back into the game thisafternoon
at the Shellcom Dome in Sendai, Japan after conceding five runsto
Australia in the first inning.

NZCT Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin started the game on the
mound but hecouldn’t keep a lid on the Aussie hitters. Martin
faced just sevenbatters and took one strike out while giving
up three hits and five runs.

Manley replaced Martin on the mound in the first inning and reined
theAustralian batters in as they recorded just one further hit
in the game.Manley faced 30 batters taking eight strike outs
while giving up just theone hit. 

NZCT Black Sox manger Grant McCarroll said after the game that
the Kiwiteam showed true grit and determination to fight their
way back into thegame and level the scores up at 5-5 after seven
inning. 

To break the deadlock the game went into the tie breaker inning
and theNZCT Black Sox took full advantage picking up four runs
while shuttingthe Australians out. 

Crucial with the bat for the NZCT Black Sox was Wellington outfielderThomas
Makea who smashed two homeruns in the game including one in thetie
breaker inning to seal the win for New Zealand. 

After being pushed hard by the Australians this afternoon the
NZCT BlackSox will be back on the diamond tonight at 8pm as they
take on the hometeam Japan.
