--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday May 19th - Sunday May 21st

Jarvis, ON

The Niagara Snappers competed in the Jarvis Merchants Senior
Tournament this weekend coming away with a 2-2 record and failing
to qualify for Sundays playoffs. The Snappers opened up against
the Oshawa Junior BB's who finished 4th at the junior Canadian
Championships in 2005. Byron Demoe got the start and pitched
3 innings picked up the win as the Snappers downed the BB's 6-1.
Dan Duemo pitched 3 innings in middle relief striking out 7
and Mike Bateman came on in the final inning striking out 2 of
the 3 batters he faced to record the save. At the plate, Peter
Dobbin slammed his second home run of the year and went 2-4,
and Scott Young and Kevin Newhouse also chipped in with 2 hits
apiece.

Saturday morning saw the Snappers matched up with the Kitchener
Twins for the 5th time in a week. Kitchener won 3 games on opening
weekend against the Snappers. The Twins were short handed this
weekend with several of their stars away at the Team Canada Selection
Camp. Mike Bateman pitched 4 solid workmanlike innings, the
Snappers got past the Kitchener Twins 5-2. Again, the pitching
by committee approach worked as Bateman pitched 4, Duemo pitched
2 not allowing a run and striking out 3, and Perry Bartley got
his first throws of the season in by pitched the 7th inning and
not allowing a run or a hit. Jarrod Burtt and Scott Young both
went 2-3 with triples and Jim Wilson and Jamie Morrey went 1-3
with doubles to help push the Snapper offense.

Saturday afternoon, the Snappers who were sitting at 2-0 and
atop their division were set to face to very tough, veteran team
Midland Explorers. Former USA National Team pitcher Doug Gillis
got the ball for the Explorers and shut the Snappers down completely,
throwing a 1 hitter and striking out 10 in a 7-0 Midland win
that was shortened to 5 innings due to the mercy rule in effect.
Trevor Falk had the lone hit for the Snappers. Byron Demoe
gave up 6 runs in the first inning and then settled down for
the next 3 innings not allowing a run and only 1 hit over that
time. Jason Paylove came on in the 5th and gave up 1 run.

At this point, three teams in the Snapper's division finished
round robin play with a 2-1 record (Midland, Niagara, and Kitchener).
However, based on runs against, Niagara gets the #3 seed so
has to play a "play-in" game on Saturday night for the right
to move on in the tournament and play in the playoffs on Sunday.
The game is against the #4 seeded team from the other division
which turned out to be the Oshweken Redmen featuring Rob Schweyer
who is from the Jarvis area but pitches the majority of the summer
professionally in the United States. The Snappers were in control
the entire game being up 4-0 going into the top of the 6th, and
then the wheels fell off. Errors and some timely hitting contributed
to an 11-4 6 inning mercy loss to the Redmen. Dan Duemo was
the tough luck loser, Duemo was throwing a gem until the 6th
inning when his defense let him down and the Redmen took advantage
of it sending 16 men to the plate. At the plate, the Snappers
we paced by Scott Young who went 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI's.
Alex Shotski helped out with a 2 hit game as did Trevor Falk.

The Snappers will now turn their attention to their first GHFL
game of the season which takes place this Wednesday May 24 at
8:30 pm in Mississauga against the Arrows. After that, the Snappers
will return home for a double header on Tuesday May 30th against
the #4 ranked senior team in North American, the Orillia Riversharks.
Just a reminder that the Snapper Shoot-Out will be returning
for its 3rd year from June 2-4 in Virgil at Centennial Park.
There is more information, including a schedule of games on
the Snappers web site at www.niagarasnappers.com. Included will
be a full BBQ, a beer garden with views of all 3 diamonds, a
full colour 40 page program that the Snappers have put together
this year, opening ceremonies on Friday night with a special
appearance by Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Gary Burroughs,
and lots of great fastball action. 16 of the best intermediate
teams are converging on Virgil to try and grab their piece of
the $2500 in cash prizes to be won, and to try to unseat the
2 time defending champion Niagara Snappers. Keep an eye out
for more information that will be coming in your local newspapers
as well as Cogeco Cable 10. We look forward to seeing everyone
out at the ballpark.
