Subject: Alvinston Indians Finish 3rd at ST Clements Tourney
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alvinston ON, Canada
This past weekend, the Alvinston Indians travelled to St. Clements
for their
first tournament of the young season. Alvinston captured wins
over the
Breslau Black Sox and Kitchener Phoenix, to put them in the "A"
Division of
the tournament, and earning a double-life for their efforts.
The Indians
then dropped a one run decision to the Port Elgin Blue Devils,
defeated the
Mitchell Mets, and lost in the semi-finals to Port Elgin again
by a one-run
margin, and just missed advancing to the finals because of the
loss. They
finished third in the "A" Division of the tournament, which acted
as a tune
up for next wekeends Snapper Shootout tournament in Niagara Falls.
Overall,
the weekend was considered relatively successful, as the local
Indians faced
some stiff competition and got the bats going, while recording
a 3 wins and
2 loss record.
In game #1, Alvinston nipped Breslau 2-1. Doug Charlton was the
winning
pitcher for the Indians tossing 5 innings and allowing 4 hits
and 1 run,
while striking out 10 Breslau batters. Derwyn Hodgins earned
the save in
the contest, as he pitched 2 scoreless innings and fanned five
batters in
the process. Mark Johnson counted both runs for the Indians,
while Joe
Triest had both RBI's.
In game #2, Alvinston faced off against the Kitchener Phoenix,
who they
defeated by the final score of 4-1. Brad Young was effective
on the mound
for the Indians as he earned the victory. He pitched 5 1/3 innings,
scattering six hits, allowing one run, and strking out 5. Derwyn
Hodgins
again came in in relief to earn the save, pitching 2/3 of an
inning,
allowing 1 hit, and striking out 1. Scoring for the Indians were
Mike
Black, Brad Young, Andy Triest, and Scott McAuley. Driving in
the runs were
Mike Black (2), Joe Triest, and Brad Young. Brad Young dialed
long distance
in the game, as he belted a solo home run, while he and McAuley
as well as
Black, all had multi-hit games.
In game #3, Alvinston battled the Port Elgin Blue Devils. This
was an
entertaining affair, but Alvinston suffered a tough 1 run loss,
as Port
Elgin scored 1 run in the final inning to secure the win. Marc
Greenwood
was 2/3 for the Indians with a solo home run and a single, while
Black and
J. Triest also had multi-hit games. Scoring for the Indians were
Black (2),
Darryl Smith, and Greenwood. Collecting RBI's were J. Triest
(2),
Greenwood, and Young.
In game #4, the Indians needed a win to advance to the semi-finals
of the
"A" Division. They did just that, as they mercied their opponents,
the
Mitchell Mets, by the final score of 9-2. Derwyn Hodgins toed
the rubber
for the Indians, as he earned the 5 inning victory, allowing
2 runs on 4
hits, while walking one, and recording 5 strikeouts. The Indians
offence
was firing on all cylinders as Mark Johnson, Ryan Chapman, and
Darryl Smith
all contributed with the long ball. Scoring for the Indians were
Black (3),
D. Smith (2), J. Triest, Johnson, Chapman and Greenwood. Driving
in the
runs were Johnson (3), D. Smith (2), Black, J. Triest, S. Smith
and Chapman.
In game #5, the semi-final game, with an opportunity to advance
to the
finals, the Indians faced off against the Port Elgin Blue Devils
again, and
the same one-run bitter taste of defeat happened again, as the
Indians
dropped a 6-5 decision. Scoring for the Indians were Black, Johnson,
J.
Triest, Young, and A. Triest, while Johnson (2), Young (2), and
Greenwood
drove in the runs. Johnson and Young went deep for the Indians
in this
contest, with Johnson's being of the two-run home run variety.
