Woodstock Legends of Fastball 2006
Friday, June 2, 2006
Woodstock, ON
Game 1
7pm played at 11pm
Kitchener Hallman Twins vs. Patsys of New York.
Part of the team delayed due to problems getting out of New York
today, so tournament directors ask Hallman Twins if they will
play at 11pm if Patsys can make it by then. Graciously, Twins
agree to play at 11pm
Patsys arrive around 10pm and by 11pm are on diamond 1 with
Kitchener warming up and by 1115 Game 1 is finally underway.
Unfortunately, the weather that held Patsys in New York was
now moving in on the Woodstock area.
Bill Simmons started the game off with one of his classic singles
for Kitchener, hustling to beat the throw at first, then moments
later stole second.
Next inning, Simmons on base again, and Red Levy hit a home run.
In the 3rd inning, Kitchener were leading 3-2 when the game was
called. at 1155 it was raining very hard and the lightening was
severe.
Todd Martin had the ball for Kitchener and Heinie Shannon was
on
the rubber for Patsys.
So it was 3-2 Twins in the 3rd when UIC Peter Kluszczynskicalled
the game.
Not a complete game.

Bridgeport moves on to play Patsys at 1pm.
Interesting to note that this game featured the Host team for
the 2006 ISC World Tournament being held in Kitchener, August
11-19 AND the Host team for the ISC II Tournament of Champions
being held in Kitchener and Cambridge August 13-18.
Also interesting to note that both pitchers are well known in
the area and are named Todd, Winkworth for Bridgeport and for
their cross town friends, Martin for Twins.
If anyone ever had any doubt about the quality of play one can
expect at an ISC II tournament, this game in particular, and
the play by both the Braves of Bridgeport and the Cubs of Elmira,
should put it to bed for good. Both teams played their hearts
out and went home proud. They also behaved like gentlemen on
and off the field all weekend. Congratulations to both the Braves
and the Cubs. Larry Lynch and his group did a good thing bringing
in these two popular local teams.
GAME 20
Jarvis Merchants at Patsys of NY
Patsys: 1

This was a closely fought contest until the bottom of the 5th
when Heflin broke out for four runs. Up until then it was a sea
saw battle, with many thinking that St. Thomas with their powerful
bench strength would out last the very short bench of Heflin,
but it was not to be.

GAME 25
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Patsys of New York at Orillia River Sharks
Orillia: 7
Patsys: 0
Orillia: 0.0.3.2.2.x.x.x.x.7.6.1
Patsys: 0.0.0.0.0.x.x.x.x.0.1.1.
WP: Rob OBrien: 5 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 12 K, 0 BB
C: Sean OBrien
LP: Gerald Muizelaar: 5 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 1 BB
For Orillia:
3 run home run by 3rd baseman Ian Fehrman went into the duck/swan
pond way over the right field fence (wild life and SPCA are looking
for him).
2nd baseman Rhys Casley hit a two run home run.
Andy Jackson hit a two run home run with Ian Fehrman on base
in the bottom of the 5th to wrap it up.
MVP of the Game: Rob OBrien, 1-hitter, 12 Ks
How do you explain this one? Orillia struggled against both Elmira
(an ISC II team) and Heflin Gremlins, who were playing with a
very short bench. Then they go up against the Team of Giants
from NYC and blow them out of the park. I cannot explain it.
Patsys must have the biggest team I have ever seen, the average
size must be about 63, and there are not enough seats in a
dugout to hold them all, there are so many of them. They had
one tight game today and a slug fest, but their final game, they
forgot their bats, it seems. Maybe Orillia was just up for it
and were at their peak, I do not know.
Not sure its going to make good TV viewing, but any mens fastball
on TV is worth promoting so look into the Rogers network (in
Ontario only) tomorrow, Monday evening, June 5th and again next
Saturday, June 10th. At least you will see the two of the better
teams to take the field this year, even if it is only a five
inning game.
END OF GAME SUMMARIES.
My thanks to ALL the game scorers and announcers who took great
care to prepare these game reports and a special thanks to Joe
Todd for bringing every one of them to me.
I cannot do justice to thanking Larry Lynch, Chuck Hendricks,
Brian Paton and all their colleagues and friends who worked so
hard to bring us a great weekend of ball. We cannot blame them
for the weather but we can thank them for making sure we got
in great ball when it was not raining on Sunday. I know Larry
will do his usual great job of a tournament wrap up, after he
takes a couple of well earned days of rest. And I am sure we
will hear from many teams who participated and hear their side/s
of the story. This is a quality event at a great park and should
be added to your MUST LIST for 2007.
It was great seeing so many fans who are old friends in the park
again after a long cold winter; welcome back to all of you. Sighted
in the park (only a partial list) Maz without Pat; Bill and Anne;
Gibby without the cat; John and his other brother John; the whole
gang from KW; Marg and her room mate; Joe Todd and his gang of
score keeper/announcers; and sorry to all I have missed. Prominent
missing: Spring, Joe T. Roger, Pat. We missed you.
Thanks
Al Doran
