Midland, MI
 
The 5th Annual Boulevard Lounge/Explorer Invitational was held
over the weekend to perfect conditions and some excellent fastpitch.
 The Midland Explorers defeated Heflin, 9-2, in the championship
game to win the tourney.
 
I'd like to thank all the teams for coming in and making it a
successful weekend and look forward to next year's tourney. 
Special thanks to Marc Gillis who was the tournament director
for the weekend, Joe Squires (Umpire in Chief), and Lee Isenhart
(Explorers president) for all their efforts to ensure that the
tourney ran smoothly.
 
Next games for the Explorers is June 24/25 are DHs against Kitchener
and Oshweken in Ontario.
 
 
Complete Game Summaries
Game 1:  Explorers 4 (1-0)     Coppens 1 (0-1)
WP - Doug Gillis (4H, 12K, 0BB), LP - Rick Engle (7H, 11K, 6BB)
Engle drove in a run with a double in the 3rd inning and Kevin
Coppens had 2 hits for Coppens.  For the Explorers, Todd Moore
drove in 2 runs with a single in the 6th.  Steve Horning and
Craig Crawford hit back to back homers in the 7th.  Steve Roberts
was 2x3 (plus 2 stolen bases).
 
Game 2:  Priority Mortgage 5 (1-0)     Rice Creek 2 (0-1)
WP - Duke Vanderark (6H, 4K, 4BB), LP - Sean Kelly (10H, 6K,
2BB)
Rice Creek scored 2 unearned runs in the top of the 1st and Ryan
Saylor had 4 hits.  Terry Boetsma drove in 2 runs with a double
in the 3rd.  Scott Gruppen drove in 2 with a single in the 4th.
 Dave Lach, Boetsma and Jeff Geggen each had 2 hits.
 
Game 3:  Oshawa 7 (1-0)     Priority Mortgage 6 (1-1)
WP - Rob Bennet (8H, 7K, 0BB), LP - Tracy Boetsma (11H, 3K, 1BB)
Matt Dasilva and Rob Bennet homered for Oshawa while Sammy Tyler,
Bennet, Carl Moloney and Jamie Plirson each had 2 hits.  Mike
Gruppen homered for Priority while Dave Lach, Terry Boetsma and
Gruppen each had 2 hits.
 
Game 4:  Planggers 7 (1-0)     Dolan & Murphy 3 (0-1)
WP – Rick Plangger (8H, 4K, 1BB), LP – Juan Portolichio (12H,
10K, 1BB)
Jeff Bohne hit 2 homers and had 4 RBI and Doc Brown went 4x4
for Planggers.  DJ Cocks and Adam Perkins hit solo homers for
DM in the 3rd inning.  Dave Schuett and Mike Drew eachhad 2 hits
for DM.
 
Game 5:  Heflin 3 (1-0)     Rice Creek 2 (0-2)
WP – Blair Ezekiel (4H, 9K, 1BB), LP – Jeff Lovell (8H, 0K, 3BB)
Chris Rivard and Adam Saylor hit solor HR’s for Rice Creek. 
Eduardo Leonardo hit a HR and Frank Perez and Ryan Kostel each
drove in a run for Heflin.  Kostel and Leonardo each had 2 hits.
 
Game 6:  Oshweken 3 (1-0)     Explorers 1 (1-1)
WP – Mike Joseph (5H, 9K, 1BB), LP – Brian Whitman (4H, 3K, 1BB)
Norm Logan hit a 2-run homer in the 1st, and Rory Miller drove
in a run in the 3rd.  Logan and Miller each had 2 hits.  Jeff
Servinski drove in Midland’s run with a Sac Fly in the 7th. 
Kyle Beane and Todd Moore each had 2 hits.
 
Game 7:  Oshwken 11 (2-0)     Coppens 4 (0-2)
WP – Rory Miller (7H, 5K, 4BB), LP – Rob Collamer (13H, 5K, 1BB)
Rory Miller, Calvin Miller, Dave Sowder and Craig MacDonal each
had 2 hits for Oshweken and Lee Hopkins hit a solo HR.  Tony
Johnson had a 2-RBI single for Coppens.
 
Game 8:  MVD Sports 7 (1-0)     Oshawa 0 (1-1)
WP – TyRon McKinney (2H, 8K, 4BB), LP – Rob Bennet (7H, 3K, 2BB)
Marty Humphries had 2 hits for Oshawa.  Matt Van Dine had 2 hits,
and McKinney, Brian Culler and Van Dine each scored 2 runs for
MVD.
 
Game 9:  Heflin 11 (2-0)     Priority Mortgage 0 (1-2)
WP – Paul Algar (4H, 17K, 2BB), LP – Duke Vanderark (16H, 0K,
2BB)
Jason Bialahowski was 2x3 for Priority.  Leonardo and Kostel
each had 3 hits and Frank Perez and Nate Fish homered for Heflin.
 
Game 10:  Planggers 4 (2-0)     Coppens 3 (0-3)  8 innings
WP – Doug Sleep (8H, 2K, 1BB), LP – Rick Engle (8H, 3K, 1BB)
Kevin Coppens and Chris Bowen each had RBI’s to give Coppens
a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but a 2-run homer with
2-out in the bottom of the 7th tied it.  Bowen drove in another
run in the top of the 8th, but Rusty Weaver hit a 2-run homer
in the bottom of the 8th to give Planggers the win.
 
Game 11:  Heflin 9 (3-0)     Oshawa 0 (1-2)
WP – Blair Ezekiel (3H, 10K, 1BB), LP – Rob Bennet (10H, 0K,
1BB)
Matt DaSilva was 2x2 for Oshawa.  Ryan Kostel was 3x3 with a
HR and Nate Fish was 2x2 with a Grand Slam.
 
Game 12:  Explorers 2 (2-1)     Planggers 1 (2-1)
WP – Grant Patterson (4H, 12K, 0BB), LP – Doug Sleep (6H, 7K,
1BB)
Adam Binkley was 2x3 with a solo homer for Planggers.  Midland
scored on a squeeze bunt by Steve Horning and an RBI single by
Steve Roberts.  Roberts and Horning each had 2 hits.
 
Game 13:  Dolan and Murphy 4 (1-1)     Oshweken 3 (2-1)   8 innings
WP – Mike Joseph (6H, 7K, 1BB), LP – Jason Iuli (4H, 8K, 0BB)
Adam Perkins had a game-winning single in the bottom of the 8th
for DM.  Calvin Miller (2-run) and Rory Miller (solo) hit HR’s
for Oshweken.  Jared Gutesha hit a solo homer and Carlos Rodriquez
was 2x3 with a 2-run homer for DM.
 
Game 14:  Explorers 8 (3-1)     Dolan & Murphy 1 (1-2)
WP – Doug Gillis (7H, 8K, 1BB), LP – Juan Portilichio (7H, 4K,
2BB)
Kyle Beane drove in Horning with a Sac Fly and Jeff Servinski
hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning for Midland.  Beane homered
in the 4th for and Horning was 2x3.  Carlos Rodriquez was 2x2
with an RBI for DM.
 
Game 15:  MVD 6 (2-0)     Priority Mortgage 3 (1-3)
WP – Tyron McKinney (3H, 7K, 2BB), LP – Tracy Boetsma (6H, 0K,
2BB)
Craig Scott hit a 2-run homer in the 1st for MVD and finished
2x4.  Tracy Boetsma had a 3-run homer and Mike Price was 3x4
for Priority.
 
Game 16:  Rice Creek 7 (1-2)     Oshawa (1-3)
WP – Sean Kelly (4H, 6K, 1BB), LP – Brian Mather (5H, 5K, 7BB)
Steve Myers had a 2-RBI double and Matt Shock scored 2 runs for
Rice Creek.
 
Game 17:  MVD Sports 6 (3-0)     Rice Creek 2 (1-3)
WP – Tom Berube (7H, 12K, 0BB), LP – Jeff Lovel (9H, 2K, 2BB)
Steve Myers was 2x3 for Rice Creek.  Brian Culler was 3x4 and
Kevin Scott, Matt Van Dine, Bryan Hall (HR) each had 2 hits for
MVD.
 
Game 18:  Planggers 3 (3-1)     Oshweken 2 (2-2)
WP – Doug Sleep (6H, 7K, 1BB), LP – Rory Miller (5H, 5K, 4BB)
Duane Greenbird had 2 hits for Oshweken.  Planggers scored the
go-ahead run on a bases loaded walk in the 5th.
 
Game 19:  Dolan & Murphy 4 (2-2)     Coppens (0-4)
WP – Juan Portilichio (2H, 11K, 7BB), LP – Rob Collamer (6H,
7K, 4BB)
Tony Johnson and Matt Morgan each had hits for Coppens.  Jared
Gutesha hit a 2-run homer and Mike Drew was 2x3 for DM.
 
Game 20:  Heflin 8 (4-0)     MVD 0 (3-1)
WP – Blair Ezekiel (3H, 9K, 0BB), LP – Tom Berube (5H, 6K, 9BB)
Steve Schucker was 2x3 for Heflin.

a hit for MVD.  Craig Crawford was 3x4 with 2 homers, and Kyle
Beane hit a 2-run homer for Midland.
 
Semi-Final     Game 22:  Heflin 4 (5-0)     Planggers 1 (3-2)
WP – Paul Algar (2H, 15K, 0BB), LP – Doug Sleep (7H, 5K, 0BB)
Doc Brown drove in Planggers run.  Blair Ezekiel had 2 HR’s and
4 RBI for Heflin.
 
Championship     Game 23:  Explorers 9 (5-1)     Heflin 2 (5-1)
WP – Doug Gillis (3H, 6K, 1BB), LP – Blair Ezekiel (3H, 4K, 3BB)
Frank Perez drove in a run for Heflin.  Todd Moore was 2x3 with
a homer and Kyle Beane drove in 3 for Midland.

17IP, 2BB)
