Day 3 of Canada Cup Action

(Surrey, BC) - Tough love as the Senior Women's National Team
is defeated by the Netherlands in game three of the Canada Cup
of Softball by a score of 7-6.

The Netherlands took to a commanding lead early in the first
inning forcing Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) to relieve Robin
Mackin (Newmarket, ON) after scoring 6 runs in 3 hits in one
third innings of work. The Netherlands continued to frustrate
the Canadian pitchers increasing their lead to 7 runs on 5 hits.

Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) sparked life in the Canadian offense
with a solo homerun in the bottom of the first. Lawrie and company
picked up on the energy and bounced back to shut down the Netherlands
offence retiring 12 straight batters including 8 strikeouts.
Canada struck offensively in the 5th inning and cut the Netherlands
lead to three runs with an Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) single
that scored Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) and Rachel Schill (Kitchener,
ON) followed by a Tamra Howren (Surrey, BC) single that scored
pinch runner Katie Hnatyk (London, ON).

The hitting continued for Canada as Angela Lichty (Guelph, ON)
singled to score Howren. Cindy Eadie (Brantford, ON) proceeded
to steal home on a wild throw from the catcher trying to get
the tag on Lichty at first, cutting the lead to only 1 run in
the bottom of the 7th.

Lawrie finished the game out strong for Canada giving up 3 hits,
1 run and striking out 13. Despite producing 11 hits and 6 runs,
the Senior Women's National Team's rally fell short as the Canadians
fell to the Netherlands by a score of 7-6.

"Aside from the first half of the first inning, there was a lot
of positive in the game" stated Lori Sippel, Senior Woemn's National
Team Head Coach. "I'm proud of the team, they performed well
under pressure. They kept fighting and produced some great offense.
We need to focus on the things we did well."

The Senior Women's National Team will look for a win against
the Florida Quicksilver on Tuesday, July 4th. For complete statistical

In other Canada Cup Action, Canada Elite fell to Australia and
defeated Venezuela improving their tournament record to 3 wins
and 1 loss.

In game 1 The Australian National Team flashed the bats early
and took to a 3 to 0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Canada
Elite battled back in the second off an Alicia Narodowski (Vancouver,
BC) single scoring two runs and cutting the lead to 1 run. Canada
continued to pressure and was rewarded on a Daniela Pappano (Bolton,
ON) double scoring Erin Gee (Burnaby, BC) from first to tie the
game. Pappano proceeded to steal home on a wild pitch to give
Canada Elite a one run lead in the top of the 5th.

The Australians rallied in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game
and continued to pressure ending the game late in the 7th to
give Canada Elite their first loss of the tournament.

In late action, Canada Elite defeated Venezuela by a score of
5-4 and improved their record to 3 wins and 1 loss.

Canada Elite took to an early lead in the late game against Venezuela
as Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) slugged a three-run home run
in the top of the first. Canada Elite continued their dominance
at the plate producing 5 runs on 10 hits.

Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) picked up the win for Canada Elite
and Sarah Belanger (Winnipeg, MB) picked up the save. Venezuela
pressured throughout the game however fell short in mounting
a comeback. For complete statistical information, please visit
