Day 4 of Canada Cup Action

(Surrey, BC) - After losing to the Florida Quicksilver in an
exhibition match on Thursday, June 29th, Canada looked for redemption
in Tuesday's game against the Quicksilver.

Leaving nothing to chance, Canada came out roaring early with
an Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) single that scored Sheena Lawrick
(Calgary, AB). The offensive attack continued in the second
as Kristy Odamura (Richmond, BC) executed a squeeze bunt to score
Angela Lichty (Guelph, ON) from third. Melanie Matthews put
Canada up 3-0 when she drove in pinch runner Katie Hnatyk (London,
ON).

Cindy Eadie (Brantford, ON) drove the life from Florida in the
3rd as she singled to score Lawrick and gave Canada their final
run of the game. Although the bats continued for Canada, their
focus on tight defensive gave them their second win of the tournament.

Stellar pitching from Canada's starter Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver,
BC) had Canada's offence and defense working in perfect harmony.
Holtz picked up the win shutting out the Florida offence allowing
only 5 hits and striking out 12 in 7 complete innings of work.

"There was some great energy from the team" said Holtz. "We
came ready to play today. As a pitcher it is always easier when
you have the lead and that helped us control the game."

"This was a big performance coming off yesterday's loss" stated
Lori Sippel, Senior Women's National Team Head Coach. "We came
out in full stride and our veterans took control of the game.
We played both sides of the game very well tonight and our battery,
Holtz and Cumpstone set the tone for us throughout the game."

Florida Quicksilver, who had been undefeated up until day 4,
was defeated twice on the day. The first came at the hands of
the Chinese Taipei and the other from Canada bringing their record
to 3 wins and 2 losses. With the win, Canada improves to 2 wins
and 2 losses in the tournament. For complete statistical information,

In other Canada Cup action, the Canadian Elite Team edged the
Washington Blast in game 5 of their Canada Cup tournament with
a score of 5-4.

Hitting continued to be the driving force for Canada Elite as
the Elite took to an early lead off of a Cambria McKay (Brampton,
ON) single scoring Daniela Pappano (Bolton, ON) in the first
inning. Brittany Freight (Placentia, CA) stole home in the second
inning to give Canada Elite a 2 run lead. Canada Elite exploded
in the 6th with back-to-back homeruns including a Shannon Rossiter
(Surrey,BC) two-run shot over left center field followed by a
solo homerun by Becky Hartley (Richmond, BC) giving Canada Elite
a 5-0 lead.

Megan MacKenzie (Winnipeg, MB) picked up the win for Canada Elite
allowing no runs on 6 hits striking out 4 in five and one third
innings of work. Sarah Belanger (Winnipeg, MB) came in to relieve
MacKenzie and held Washington scoreless until the 7th when she
was relieved by Katie Rosentreter (Winnipeg, MB) after giving
up 4 late runs in the inning. Rosentreter closed out the game
for Canada and picked up the save.
