Canada Defeats China in Day 3 of World Cup Action

(Ottawa, ON) - After dropping their first 2 games in World Cup action, Canada picked up an important win against China in day 3 by a score of 3-1.

Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) received the start in the circle for Canada and held China scoreless through 4 complete innings.  It was China, however, who struck first late in the fifth inning stringing together 2 hits and 1 run to open up the scoring.  Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) came in to relieve Lawrie after four and one third innings of work and held China scoreless for the remainder of the game giving up only 2 hits.

Canada broke out offensively in the sixth inning off of a Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) single that scored Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB).  Tamra Howren (Surrey, BC) followed with a double to center field scoring Salling.  Angela Lichty (Guelph, ON) capped the inning driving in pinch runner Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) giving Canada a 2 run lead late in the game.

"We had a slow start" admitted Lori Sippel, Head Coach of the Senior Women's National Team.  "It was a great defensive game on both sides.  We battled hard and got things going for us with some great bats from people coming off of the bench.  This was a big win for us and is a sign of good things to come."

With the win Canada improves their record to 1 win and 2 losses.  Canada will face Australia on Sunday, July 16th at 2:00 pm Central Standard Time.  For complete statistical information, please visit www.softball.ca
