Strong Finish for Canada in World Cup Round Robin

 

(Ottawa, ON) - Canada defeated the world number two ranked Australia
4-1 in World Cup action in Oklahoma City, Okla.

 

Canada took to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off of a
Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) single scoring Kristy Odamura
(Richmond, BC) followed by an Angela Lichty (Guleph, ON) single
scoring Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) and Bradley.  Canada increased
their lead to 4 late in the fourth inning as Odamura doubled
to score Rachel Schil (Kitchener, ON).

 

Australia's only run came in the fifth off of a walk, a single
and an error to score Natalie Ward cutting Canada's lead down
to only 3 runs.

 

Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) picked up the win for Canada
hurling six and one third innings giving up only 1 run on 5 hits
and striking out 5.  Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) picked up
the save retiring the only 2 batters she faced.

 

In late World Cup Action - Canada defeated Great Britain 9-1
to in their final round robin game.

 

Canada exploded offensively in the first 3 innings of the ball
game to take a 9-0 lead off of a notable Angela Lichty (Guelph,
ON) 3 run double in the second and a Katie Hnatyk (London, ON)
2 run homerun over left field in the third inning.

 

Great Britain scored their only run in the fifth inning with
a Stacie Townsend solo homerun. The 1 run wasn't enough as the
game was called after the fifth due to the "run rule".

 

Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) came out big giving up only 1 hit
and striking out 6 in 5 complete innings of work picking up the
win for Canada.

 

With the 2 wins, Canada improved their record to 3 wins and 2
losses and ranked third after the round robin.  Canada will face
off against Australia in a bid to secure a World Cup bronze medal.
