Owen Sound Crunch 4 Belmore Stingers 3
A series of errors and passed balls cost the Belmore Stingers
in their
Bluewater Fastball League game last night in Owen Sound.
The Stingers opened the scoring with 2 runs in the top of the
first inning.
Rightfieder Scott Smith had a hard infield smash to get on base
for Belmore.
He scored on a solid double from catcher Robb Hammell.
Pitcher Chris Eadie got on board on a fielder's choice and would
come around
to score Belmore's second run in the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Crunch second baseman Troy Barfoot
put Owen
Sound on the board.
Barfoot singled, stole second and scored on an r.b.i. single
by catcher Tony
Lisk.
In the top of the second, Barfoot made a sterling stop at second
on a hot
smash for a put out at first to keep the margin 2-1 for Belmore.
The Crunch tied it in the bottom of the fourth.
Bill Ottwell singled to get on base. Crunch starter Garrett Baker
followed
with another single that rolled through the legs of the fielder
allowing
Ottwell to come around to score.
Shane Smith got the lead back for Belmore, drilling a long homer
over the
fence in left to make it 3-2
In the bottom of the 5th, errors and passed balls gave the lead
to the
Crunch.
Barfoot singled, went to third on an error and scored on a passed
ball.
Lisk, who got aboard via the error, would come around to score
on another
passed ball to give the Crunch a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.
While Belmore struggled in the field, the Crunch got outstanding
plays from
third baseman Jason Redmond.
Redmond made a nice play on a slow roller in the 5th to get Kyle
Wright at
first and also started a rapid 5-4-3 double play in the 6th.
Garrett Baker went all the way for the Crunch, giving up 6 hits.
Baker
struck out 5 batters including the final 3 in the 7th inning
to nail down
the win.
Eadie went all the way for Belmore giving up 6 hits and also
bearing down to
strand 8 Crunch runners during the game.
In Bluewater League notes, the game tonight at Lakeview Park
in Port Elgin
between the Blue Devils and Chepstow has been cancelled.
