USA National Team Beats HoustonThunder 1-0

 

Houston Texas – In its firstappearance after bringing home the
Championship trophy of the World Cup ofSoftball the Women’s National
Softball team extended its win streak to11-0 with a 1-0 win over
NPF Texas Thunder. Cat Osterman (Houston, Texasreturned to her
hometown to earn the win with 16 strikeouts in seven completeinnings
of work. 

 

Team USA took afirst inning lead starting out with a base hit
by Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.).Lowe finished with a team high
two hits in the game scoring the team’slone run. Andrea Duran
(Selma, Calif.hit a shot to center field to score Lowe but the
third out of the inning camewhen Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo Calif.),
earning a walk in herfirst at bat, got tagged out at third trying
to advance. 

 

Osterman, the lone Texasnative on the roster, started in the
circle striking out the first threebatters in the first. She
gave up the first and only hit of the game to DanyeleGomez in
the second but two strikeouts and a groundout to shortstop stopped
anypotential Thunder run. 

 

Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif.) singled to shortstop to lead
off the third inningbut a USAstrikeout and groundout left Watley
on base. 

 

After the hit in the second, Osterman accounted for all outs
in thethird with two strikeouts and a groundout to the pitcher.
The only otherThunder base runner to reach during the game was
Rocky Spencer who was walkedin the fifth. With two outs in the
fifth, Lowe singled to shortstop but wascalled out on the next
play off a fielders choice by Watley.  

 

Mendoza led off for the teamin the sixth with a single to left
center field and advanced to second off asac bunt by Stacey Nuveman
(La Verne, Calif.) but a strikeout and groundout left Mendoza
stranded on basein scoring position. The team left a season-high
five batters stranded on base.

 

Osterman posted three more strikeouts in the fifth and two in
the sixthand seventh to lead the team to a 1-0 victory. 

 

The series will continue with games tomorrow at 3:05 CT and 7:05
