Selects Sweep Czech Republic

Exhibition International Fastball

at Duncan McLellan Park, Owen Sound

The Owen Sound Selects swept the Czeh Republic 1-0 and 6-0.

The opening game was won with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th
inning.

Owen Sound shortstop Ryan Thompson singled, was sacrificed to
second, and
scored on an r.b.i. single from first baseman Tony Lisk.

The Czech Republic, who are set to compete at the I.S.C. Championship
in
Kitchener, displayed exceptional defence in the opener.

Shortstop Kamil Koukolik and third baseman Vaclav Mudra both
made great
plays to deny Owen Sound hits.

Not to be outdone, Selects third baseman Darryl MacKinnon made
a nifty block
and recovered to throw out a runner while Mike Taylor chased
down some well
hit balls in center field.

Reliever Trevor Wardell got the win with three innings of shutout
ball.
Wardell replaced starter Jamie Simpson who did not give up a
hit either in
his 4 inning stint.

Czech reliever Roman Matuska took the loss yielding the winning
run in the
7th. Lubos Vrbensky started for the Czechs, going 5 impressive
innings and
giving up 2 hits. Vrbensky struck out 7

center
fielder Lubos Prochazka ran down a fly ball and then nailed Thompson
trying
to advance to second with his throw.

In the second inning though, the Selects opened the scoring on
a solid solo
home run to right from Mike Reilly.

In the bottom of the third, both MacKinnon and Aaron Whitney
were on board
when Lisk drove them in with a 2 run single.

Owen Sound made it 4-0 in the 6th. Lisk got on via an error,
went to second
on a passed ball and was plated by an r.b.i. single from Bill
Ottwell.

Ottwell and MackInnon, who was a pinch runner, both came in to
score later
in the inning to close out the scoring at 6-0.
